Day 1b Of GUKPT Didsbury Event Goes Well Too

Grosvenor UK Poker TourThursdays are good but Fridays are always better. The closer you get to the weekend, the more excited you become and the more exciting your options are. There is no doubt that Day 1A of the GUKPT Didsbury event went down well and was a big success but there was a big difference between the Thursday and the Friday. This was no criticism of the organisers or the players that took part in the opening day but there were more players and a bigger buzz of excitement surrounding the Friday play.

There were a total of 94 players involved in the Day 1B activities, which was a sharp rise from the 59 that took part on Day 1A. In total, 153 players were fighting for the rights to make it through to Day 2 and just less than a third managed to progress to the Saturday action. 55 players were starting out on Saturday morning with high hopes for the event but 40 of the players will be leaving very disappointed. This is because only the top 15 players will be taking cash away with them. This means that there is a lot to play for and the tension and drama is guaranteed.

Plenty of chips picked up on Friday

The big chip leader on the day also turned out to be the big chip leader of the Day 1’s as Neils Ladefoged made hay with his 20,000 stack of opening chips. By the end of play, Ladeofoged had turned this into 119,750 chips. This beats the amount of Nigel Ventre who managed to claim 99,925 on Thursday evening.

Ladefoged does not have many cashes showing in his Hendon Mob page, but the ones that are displayed are quite impressive to say the least. He has live tournament winnings of £37,900 with his most recent cash being for £10,350 that was his reward for finishing seventh in the 2012 English Poker Open.

With players like Ventre, Peter Wigglesworth, Kevin Houghton, Matt Davenport and Erimas Livonas already through from Thursday, there were some big UK poker players making it through on Friday too. Coming through with Ladefoged were players like Mike Hill, who managed to pick up 118,375 which was also more than the amount picked up by Thursday’s leader. There was Day1B success for Julian Thew, the Sky Poker player too, who managed to earn 93,500 chips. Other players making it though were John Eames, Stuart Rutter, Steve Holden and Tom Hall.

Day 1a Of GUKPT Didsbury Goes Well

Grosvenor UK Poker TourA lot of the poker focus this weekend may fall on Australia and the WSOP-APAC Main Event but that is not the only place to find great poker action. There is plenty on offer for UK poker players and you don’t need to be in London to have something to look forward to. London is great and it is always worth a visit but it is good to see other places getting the nod when it comes to exciting poker events. Recent weeks have given Nottingham the chance to shine and very few UK venues do poker better than Dusk Till Dawn. This weekend though, it is time for Didsbury to be the one of the key poker places in the country.

This is because the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Main Event is taking place. The first of two Day 1’s took place on Thursday and the leader of the day was Nigel Ventre. After being given the same starting stack of 20,000 as the rest of the field, Ventre managed to turn this into 99,925. This made him the leader from the 59 poker players that were involved in Day 1A.

Ventre is the Day 1A leader

Of the 59 players, only 22 poker players managed to book their passage through to Say 2 which takes place on Saturday. Then again, you can bet that many of these players will have tried their luck again on Day 1B which took place on Saturday. The Friday event was always likely to be the busier of the two so the players who are already guaranteed for the Saturday action will be delighted to have booked their place but at least the players who fell by the wayside know that they still have a chance.

Nigel VentrePoker success is nothing new to Ventre though and he has picked up some success in GUKPT events before. Ventre received a cheque for £1,400 for a £200 buy in event which took place at the 2010 Club GUKPT Club Championship. That event was in Huddersfield, so he knows all about playing poker in glamorous locations and he will be keen to add to his GUKPT success in Didsbury.

Other poker players that managed to book their place on Day 2 alongside Ventre include Rob Sherwood, who managed to get 32,500 chips, Peter Wigglesworth, who held 59,450 chips and Kevin Houghton who managed to just pip Peter with 59,700 chips. Putting up a closer fight to Ventre are Matt Davenport, who managed to earn 85,700 chips and Erimas Livonas, who held 76,500 chips. Livonas has recently tasted success at the APAT World Championship Main Event and will be keen to do well in this event too.

The poker fun has only just begun in Didsbury and there will be a lot more to look out for over the course of this weekend. It may not have the media focus or the luxurious surroundings that the WSOP-APAC can offer but the GUKPT event is always worth following.

Sky Sports News Girl Issuing A New Poker Challenge

Charlotte JacksonAnyone who has ever watched Sky Sports News for more than a few minutes will know that there is a very deliberate formula the channel sticks to. No, not the obvious channel of deeply focusing on the sporting events that Sky provides coverage of, the most obvious formula is the traditional male news reporter and the glammed up female presenter. There has been some controversy over Sky Sports News presenters of late after Charlie Webster appeared on the front cover of FHM.

Some people dared to say that this was bringing Sky Sports News into disrepute and that some of the other female presenters were livid at the photos. If that is the case then the rest of the female presenters could do with getting a sense of humour or a better understanding of their role on the channel. One colleague you would have to hope who never criticised Webster would be Charlotte Jackson. Jackson is no stranger to skimpy photoshoots and she spent plenty of time on ITV wearing very little on their TV show Splash.

Jackson and Coleman haven’t been bluffing in public

Jackson has also been in the news of late thanks to her romance with Welsh boss Chris Coleman. Coleman is a bit of a character, famous for lying to the press and his club about partying late into the night during a managerial role in Spain. All in all, it has been a busy time for Jackson but she has also recently become the Sky Poker Ambassador. This mainly means Jackson will appear in the adverts for Sky Poker but she will be on the poker tables from time to time too.

Sky Sports Bounty HunterHer second Sky Poker appearance is set to take place on the 18th of April and there will be two chances to catch up with her. The first one is in a special Sky Sports Bounty Hunter and this event will be shown live on Sky Sports and on Sky Poker TV. There is a £33 entry fee and any player that manages to last longer than Charlotte manages will gain entry to a freeroll event on Friday the 19thh of April. This freeroll will have a £500 prize plus players can grab any money Charlotte grabs on the Bounty Hunter event.

There will also be a new tournament called the ‘Charlotte £6K Max’. Five players will be granted entry to this game which is scheduled to take place at 9pm on the 18thh of April. In the five nights building to this event, one winner will be chosen per night.

There are events taking place in the evenings between Saturday the 13th of April and Wednesday the 17th of April to gain entry to the event. Every player that makes their way to the big event will be guaranteed a cash prize and the top player will receive at least £2,400 for their efforts. Anyone looking out for Charlotte needs to look for the player name CharlotteJ.

Another Brit Signs Up For PKR

Simon HemsworthAnyone that likes to follow the fortunes of British poker players will be delighted to learn about the latest developments surrounding Simon Hemsworth. The 29 year old has become the latest sponsored professional for PKR.com, a site he has plenty of experience in playing.

In recent times, Simon has become one of the mainstay players in the NLHE games and he has managed to develop a sterling poker reputation for himself in recent times and on the site. Although he is able to turn his hand to a number of different poker disciplines, Hemsworth is regularly associated with the 6-max $5/$10 NLHE games. The news of his deal with PKR was unveiled at the PKR Live 2013 event but his first performance for the team came in a London Cash game.

Crazy online poker names help players to stand out

PKR Logo

If you are not sure if you have heard of his name, you may be more familiar with Hemsworth’s online name, ‘Rhymenoceros’. It may not be a name that naturally rolls off the tongue but it is certainly one that stands him out from so many of the other poker players. Simon has been playing poker for more than a decade and he joins a busy and exciting roster at Team PKR.

In the press release statement, Hemsworth said;

I feel very privileged to be asked to be the new Team PKR Pro. I want to help represent a brand I have had great affection for over the last few years. I have played almost exclusively on PKR for a long time now and made some great friends here. One of my main aims is to improve my live tournament record, so let’s hope for deep runs in the near future.

The Head of Content and PR at PKR, a Dan Grant, was also quoted in the release, saying

Simon has been one of the brightest online stars at PKR over the last few years and we know he has what it takes to make his mark in the live arena. More importantly, he’s a fantastic bloke with a great work ethic, and a great example to others who want to achieve success in poker.

While making it as a pro poker player is the dream for so many people, there is no doubt a lot of hard work involved. However, it is sure to be an exciting and challenging time for Hemsworth and congratulations are definitely due to him for his new role.

Yet Another Poker Tournament Heads To Stratford

Aspers Casino Westfield Stratford CityWith the Hippodrome playing host to some top class poker this weekend, the Aspers Casino in Stratford may have been feeling a bit left out. After all, this has been the host for so many great poker tournaments already this year but it may be that the Hippodrome is going to give it a run for its money. There is no getting away from the fact that a casino and poker room in the heart of London’s tourist centre is going to be a popular choice and its location at Leicester Square is a huge draw for the Hippodrome.

However, the Aspers Casino in Stratford is not that far away and it is not as if there are no other attractions in the nearby area. It is a huge complex, a place you could easily spend all day in and there are plenty of reasons for poker players to spend a lot of time in this part of the capital city. Next weekend though, there is a very strong reason for spending a good amount of time in the Aspers Casino.

A big venue for the big poker events

The Boylepoker.com event, their International Poker Open (IPO) will be taking place and there will be a £200+£25 buy-in for the event. This tournament will be hosted in the same venue that has recently played host to the World Poker Tour National London event and the recent Premier League VI from PartyPoker.com was also held in Stratford. The venue has very quickly established itself as one of the main draws in the London poker circuit and you can guarantee that plenty more events will be hosted here.

International Poker Open LogoThe event starts on Wednesday the 17th of April but there will be three starting flights for the event. Yes, Wednesday will be Day 1A, Thursday will be Day 1B and Friday is all set to be Day 1C! Saturday will be Day 2 proper and Sunday is Day 3 and the final day where the poker action will continue until there is a winner. With respect to the flight days, the evenings will begin at 7pm and it is expected that the events will carry through until just before 1am. There is a lot of interest in this event and organisers have said they expect there to be around 700 poker players involved at the time when the registration process is shut.

There is an added boost for the players with the news that Boylesports have added £5,000 to the prize pool, boosting the amount that will be on offer. The kudos of taking on and defeating your fellow poker player is always good but when it comes down to it, nothing spells success like poker winnings!

UKIPT Series Is Ready To Roll

UKIPT Series Hippodrome Casino LondonAlthough the problems and differences between the United Kingdom and Ireland are still very much evident, there are ways that progress is being made. It is not as if a successful poker tournament is going to have any impact on the future of the 6 counties in the North of Ireland but it would be fair to say that the UK and Ireland Poker Tour, or UKIPT, has been a great success. The organisation has been operating since late 2009 and it has gone from strength to strength.

The new season does not properly get underway until the 12th of June, where there is a jolly outing to Marbella to commemorate the start of season 4. However, poker players keen to find some UKIPT action will be able to get involved this weekend with the launch of the UKIPT Series. This is not part of the official Season 4 but it will run alongside the main tour, providing additional poker opportunities.

The events, listed as £250+£25 events will follow the same structure as the Main Events from the UKIPT but there will be a tighter time scale. There will be a 30 minute clock in play and with a starting stack of 20,000, there is likely to be a lot of poker played. The layout of the event will see there being two separate day 1’s, which will take place on Friday and Saturday and then Sunday will see Day 2 taking place. Even though the average working week is changed beyond all recognition for many people across the UK, poker events that take place over the course of a weekend will be of benefit to many poker players.

You can rely on Liv Boeree to grab the headlines

Liv Boeree

The UKIPT Series event will take place in London with the new PokerStars LIVE at the Hippodrome Casino card room, which is sure to be one of the major poker venues in the capital. One player who is sure to be at the event this weekend is Liv Boeree who has taken to Twitter to drum up interest in the event. Given that she is a PokerStars player, it is perhaps not the biggest surprise that she will be at the event but any time Liv is at a poker event, she always manages to grab the attention.

There will be an added sense of value and merit to the UKIPT Series down to the fact that the winner will receive entry to the UKIPT Champion of Champions event. This will be a major highlight at the end of the Season 4 of the UKIPT. With a passport available for season 5 of the UKIPT season, this will be hotly contested. Poker players love value and being able to play for the chance to get a whole season of future benefits will definitely inspire players to get involved with the UKIPT Series in the months ahead. The more poker tournaments the better so this is a welcome addition to the UK and Irish poker community.

UK Players Have A Great PokerStars Weekend

PokerStars LogoIt is perfectly understandable that the weekend is the time when plenty of people take to online poker sites. Even though there are poker sites running games and tournaments at every hour of the day, there is not always the time or energy to take part in these games during the week after work. It is not just a case of turning up for these games and hoping that your skills will kick in.

Online poker can be a draining and taxing game which means that people need to feel at their best in order to succeed. This is not always possible after a long shift but at the weekend, people are more relaxed and they should have more free time. This is why online poker sites like PokerStars provide so many different tournaments and cash prizes at the weekend. Taking a look at the results and the winners from this weekend suggests that many UK players had a brilliant weekend!

Pride of place goes to a player called “holly17” who was taking part in the $1m guaranteed game on Sunday. This player managed to finish in third place, which saw them grab a total of $122,595 for their work. The top prize went to a “VanDobeln” from Finland, with a prize of $245,193.87. That may have been double the money that the UK entrant received for their third place finish but no one is going to be overly upset at claiming more than $100,000 for playing poker on a lazy Sunday! This win is undoubtedly the headline grabber when it comes to UK online poker players at the weekend but there were plenty of other successes at PokerStars to look back on too.

Lots of UK poker wins to celebrate

There was a UK triumph in the $109 Sunday Kickoff event although a two-way deal will have lessened the money that made its way back to the UK. “flukey111” was the successful player, holding off “HDH53” from Germany and this saw a prize of $24,862.86 going to the UK player. There was another two-way deal in the $11 Saturday Duel with “jamesg777” from the UK finishing in second place but receiving $3,352.31 for his efforts. This was only $500 less than what the winning player from Russia received so in that sense, it was a good deal for the UK player.

The $162 Sunday 6-Max event, which had a guaranteed $100,000 on offer, also brought notable UK success. “JIZOINT” finished in second place and they received $19,870.87 for their hard work and effort. Missing out on a top prize is always going to be disappointing but again, get close to 20 grand for a few hours’ work is something that most people are happy to accept now and again!

British Flag“TapeWormJim”, a poker player taking the name from a lovable computer character from the 1990s, took part in the $530 Sunday 500 where there was a guarantee of $300,000. Finishing in eight place, the UK player received $8,720.

With “Pyjama Dan” earning $1,500 for a second place finish in the $215 Weekly FL Hold ‘Em game, “TonyParkes” picking up over $4,000 in the $2.22+R Saturday Splash 3x-Turbo game and two UK players finishing in the top 6 of the $3.30 Saturday Micro, $25K Gtd game, there was a lot to celebrate. The last game saw “SplitSpadez” finish second but thanks to a three-way deal, they received $3,713.92 which was the same amount that first and third received.

Anyone looking for something to do next week should take encouragement from this spate of UK poker success. Stay tuned to MaxPokerBonus.co.uk or follow @maxpokerbonus on Twitter to remain up-to-date with the latest UK poker news.

Zahir Aslam Is A Big Dusk Till Dawn Winner

Zahir AslamWhile footballers dream about winning in famous stadiums like Wembley or Hampden, poker players want to play at the most prestigious poker venues. There will be many poker players who have dreamt about winning a major event in Las Vegas and having all eyes of the gaming community on them. However, a poker player doesn’t have to go all the way to Las Vegas to experience playing in a world-renowned poker venue, there is one in Nottingham.

Okay, Nottingham may lack the glitz and glamour that Las Vegas delivers nonchalantly but there is no doubt that the Dusk Till Dawn club is one of the most respected poker venues in the country. It hasn’t been easy for DTD to earn this reputation but it is fully deserved and it shows no sign of slipping away. This means that poker players will always be keen to make their way to the venue and try and be a winner.

One player that no longer has to dream about being a DTD winner is Zahir Aslam. This is down the fact that he has become the latest poker player to clinch the £300 Deepstack game. This is no mean feat, especially when you take on board that there were a total of 468 players vying for the prize. A top prize of £33,596 is definitely a huge incentive for players and there was a massive turnout.

Plenty of interest in this poker game

Dusk Till Dawn Poker Club

This is always a tournament that is very popular with DTD players and even though there was a £300+£36 buy-in for the event, there ended up being an overlay of close to £10,000. When there is a guarantee of £150,000 for a single poker tournament, it is probably not surprising that there is a massive level of interest in the event.

Of the 468 players, only the top 63 were guaranteed to take cash home which meant there was heartache for Terry Jordan. Jordan was the 64th player in the event which meant that everyone still sat at a table upon his exit knew there was a minimum of £600 coming their way. When the bubble bursts, some players can relax, safe in the knowledge that they will receive some cash reward for their poker endeavour. The final table was set up when Dennis Troake crashed out in 10th position.

Paul Hardy was the first player to exit from the final table with £3,138.75 for his trouble and he was swiftly followed by James Sykes who earned £3,720. In 7th place was Peter Wigglesworth who received £4,650 and in 6th was Robert Moss, who received £5,231.25. In 5th place was Aaron Brunskill who received £6,939.75 while 4th placed finisher David Shaw received £8,137.05. Third place went to Hasmukh Khodiyara who smashed through the ten grand level with £11,625. The runner up spot went to Adam King who received £19,413.75.

All of these players were left in the slipstream of Zahir Aslam though who take home more than £30,000.

UK Students Get The Chance To Play More Poker

UK Student Poker ChampionshipsEven though it is not long after the UK Students Poker Championship took place in Coventry, it seems as though there are more events for UK students to get involved with. Far be it from us to suggest that these students would be better off spending their time studying for upcoming exams but we hope that one or two students are not neglecting their studies. If the current crop are the doctors, dentists and lawyers of the future, we may be in for a rough ride. You may not have a doctor that is capable of taking out kidney stones but they will all know a great deal about poker, which isn’t a completely bad thing.

The online league for UKSPC, the UK Student Poker championship has begun in earnest and in total there will be 12 weeks of poker action to look forward to. The event started on the 7th of April and there looks set to be 12 weeks of poker action before there is a break for the summer. So, in effect, this league is running while the students are meant to be studying and will be unavailable during their free time! Hopefully some of the young poker players will be able to earn some poker winnings to enjoy some travelling when it comes to making the most of their summer break. There will be a further 12 week session of online poker action after the break continues.

Play poker to win and get the rewards

The fact that the UKSPC is now aligned with the GUKPT, there are some interesting prizes on store. It is always good to take on your peers and earn the respect and kudos that go along with beating them but when it comes to poker, money is always going to be a big factor. There is a great incentive for players in the UKSPC because the winner will receive a seat at the GUKPT Grand Final, which has a value of £2,000. They will also receive a trophy to commemorate their success.

Other prizes on offer include buy-ins to major GUKPT events and to the UKPC High Roller events too. There is set to be a number of different poker games and disciplines available in the tournament so there should be something for everyone. Anyone looking to prove their poker skills while studying would be advised to see what the UKSPC has to offer.

Trickett Bows Out In Pot Limit Omaha Game

Sam TrickettOne of the best things about Twitter is that it forces you to be brief and get to the point. With Facebook and email you can witter on endlessly, boring everyone around and making everyone forget what the initial point to the story or message was. This isn’t the case with Twitter and when Sam Trickett (@Samtrickett1) updated his status from Australia, it was fairly obvious how his latest poker game panned out.

Lasted 2 hands today! Pretty annoying to get out of bed for that…..

That is not the sort of tweet you want to see from anyone but given that Trickett was looking to push on in the hunt for a WSOP bracelet, it is doubly disappointing. There is still an awful lot of poker to be played at the WSOP-APAC festival but every time you get knocked out of an event, it is understandable that your nerves will increase and your confidence will dip a bit further. It can only be hoped that Trickett bounces back from this quickly and to be fair, even the best players know that they lose a lot more than they win. It is how you bounce back from defeat that marks you out as being a top poker player and you can bet that Trickett will be on hand sooner rather than later!

Poker players fell quickly

WSOP-APAC Logo

The PLO event at the 2013 WSOP-APAC is the second event where a bracelet went up for grabs. More than 170 players were involved at the start of the play and by the end of 8 levels of poker play on the first day; this had been whittled down to 29 players. By Monday morning, there were a total of 10 players in the running.

At this point, Jim Collopy was in the lead with respect to chips, holding 207,000 while Dan Shak was in second place holding 122,000 chips. There was a fair spread all the way down to 10th place with Scott Reid looking nervously over his shoulder. Reid was holding on to 29,000 chips at this point but of course, a lot can happen in a moment or two at a poker table.

The final table is scheduled to begin at 12pm local time and play will continue until the event is done. This means that there will be a WSOP bracelet making its way to another player before too long, it’s just a shame that it won’t be going to Sam Trickett.
