Ruben Visser Is The EPT London Main Event Winner

Ruben VisserIt has been a fantastic festive of poker in London in the past week or so and while it may seem that the focus now falls on the Irish and Guinness drinkers to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, there will be plenty of big poker players celebrating a brilliant time in London. There was an awful lot of money up for grabs over the course of the different events and tournaments and of course, there was an awful lot of praise and adulation being bestowed upon the big tournament winners.

The player who walks with the highest praise is Ruben Visser. Visser held his nerve and clinched the 2013 PokerStars EPT London Main Event. In doing so, he becomes the 5th Dutch nationalist to taste success in an EPT event and the student may find that paying for the rest of his tuition becomes slightly easier from here on in. This is down to fact that not only does Visser get a great trophy and a lot of praise; he manages to walk away with a prize of £595,000. It had been a tough number of days and there were 7 hard opponents to get beyond at the final table but the 24 year old poker player can look back on his time in London with a great degree of pride and satisfaction.

Big poker event goes Dutch

Two UK poker players managed to make it through to the final 8 but unfortunately for the home crowd, these were the first two players eliminated from the final showdown. Chris Moorman was a surprise early departure but his showing still managed to earn him £57,000. Next to go was Tamer Kamel, whose 7th placed finish earned him £79,950.

EPT LogoOther finishers include the German Christopher Frank who earned £112,000 for his sixth placed finish. In fifth place was Steve O’Dwyer and the American earned £146,000. In fourth place was the Dane Theo Jorgensen who received £183,000 and in third was Sweden’s Olof Haglund, who picked up £427,564. The unlucky runner up was Mantas Visockis from Lithuania who received £377,463 for his valiant efforts.

The EPT will take a brief rest now but it won’t be long until it is back in the swing of things and the next stop is scheduled for Berlin. The festival of poker in Berlin begins on the 17th of April but the main EPT tournament dates take place between April the 21st and April the 27th. There will be plenty of other poker games and opportunities taking place between now and then but as the EPT holds a special place in the hearts of many players, you can bet that there will be plenty of poker players counting down the days to this upcoming event.

Anonymous Poker Night A Big Success

Anonymous Poker SeriesOne of the big draws about online poker is that it can help you to be someone that you are really not. There is no doubt that a lot of people love the fact that they can put on a persona or use an avatar when playing online poker to give them a certain edge or change their feelings about themselves when they player. Playing online poker can require people to be more aggressive or confident than they usually are in their everyday life and there is no doubt that the anonymous element of playing poker online helps people to become the poker player that they want to be.

It is obviously a bit harder to be anonymous when playing in an actual poker tournament against other players around the table but it seems as though it is not impossible. This has been highlighted by the fact that the first ever live event of the Anonymous Poker Series (APS), organised by Bodog got off to a brilliant start in London. There was an exciting finale but anyone hoping for a local winner would have been disappointed because Claire Renaut, the French poker player managed to overcome the opposition.

Healthy competition but nothing anonymous about this poker tournament

Claire Renaut

Claire grabbed the trophy, a lot of champagne and she also booked herself a seat for the upcoming $100,000 Grand Final of the APS which will be taking place in Manila. This is bound to be another thriller in Manila and Claire, who used to be a professional for 888 Poker can take great pride in her win and in the level of competition she overcame to win this event. Some of the players who were involved in the event include James Dempset, Jack Ellwoodand, James Akenhead, Mclean Karr and Fabrice Soulier.

Soulier is a pro for Everest Poker but he is also the boyfriend of Claire. Fabrice will no doubt be thinking that he will be bound for Manila too because the prize package includes flights and accommodation for two people. Then again, Claire may decide to try and write off some of the competition before she gets there so Fabrice shouldn’t be too certain about making the trip to the APS final.

In a press release issued after the event, the Poker Network President of Bodog, Jonas Odman, stated; “The Anonymous Poker Series has got off to a great start and while we can’t keep the identity of our live winners under wraps the concept of the Recreational Poker Model for online players has been embraced by both players and the industry alike. The Anonymous Poker Series is a showcase of how far the concept has come and the atmosphere at tables for the London event was exactly what we hoped it would be – everybody had a blast!”

As long as there is the same level of demand and passion for these events, the more poker events the better for the industry as a whole!

Wahlbeck Is The London Eight Game Winner

Ville WahlbeckThere are some poker players that focus purely on one poker discipline and this is a very sensible strategy. After all, if you have been blessed with a special talent and then you work hard to improve and maintain your talents, why shouldn’t you make the most of it. However, with so many different poker games and disciplines, some players aer keen to develop their skills across the board. This can be for fun, it can be done to get one over on your friends or if you are Ville Wahlbeck, you can improve your varied poker skills to give you a better chance of winning big money.

The Finnish player, a Team PokerStars Pro player came out on top if the EPT £10,300 Eight Game Championship, an achievement which saw him picking up £76,720. That is the sort of work that we would all like to earn in London in a few hours but unless you are a medium level English Premier League footballer or a skilled poker player, you’ll have to dream about making that sort of money in that sort of time scale.

Poker prize pool money shared out

There was a total prize of £215,600 on offer in this event but unsurprisingly, there was a deal arranged between 6 players in total that took some of the sting out of the share of cash. While money can always be a huge incentive to drive on and achieve more, it can also work against you. Some players, fearful of missing out on a huge prize or coming so close to major money, tend to dry up and their natural game goes out of the window. The spirit of competition may be slightly lacking when players come to agreements about financial splits but if every player is happy with the deal and agrees to it, it is unlikely that there will be any changes in this common practice.

The six players who settled on the agreement were Wahlbeck, Dan Shak, Richard Ashby, Justin Bonomo, Luke Schwartz and Elior Benjamin Sion. The UK was well represented in the final six with places 4 through to 6 being UK players and with Schwartz coming in six picking up £28,640, it was a good day out for the Brits. Between the three UK players, a sum just under £100,000 was picked up, representing a great day for the local lads. There were two US players in second and third place but it was the second ranked player, Dan Shak, that walked away with the least amount of money. A sum of £19,360 is not to be sniffed at but he was the only one in the final six to receive less than £20,000 for his efforts.

Benger Bags His First Major Live Poker Win

Griffin BengerAs the almighty Pulp sang back in the early to mid-1990s, “Do you remember the first time?” and this is certainly a question that people love to answer. There is often nothing like the exhilarating rush of adrenaline and happiness when you do something for the first time and you can bet that Griffin Benger will be feeling very happy with himself this week. This is down to the fact that the triumph during Event Number 13 at the EPT9 London was the first time that Griffin Benger ever managed to win a major live poker tournament.

This isn’t to say that Benger is a rookie or a player still making his way into the world of poker. It is just that this proud Canadian has experienced a lot more joy and success in the online poker environment. It may well be that Griffin Benger doesn’t ring a bell for you but the name of ‘Flush_Entity’ is a lot more recognisable. This is an online moniker that has certainly had a lot of success over the years and with winnings in excess of $4m in the online arena, this is one poker player that definitely has the poker skills to pay the bills.

Poker firsts are worth celebrating

Sam Greenwood

So, while the prize of £29,700 at the London EPT event was a big thrill, Benger probably took more from the fact that he was able to translate his online success into success at a real-life poker table and tournament. This could see a psychological barrier lifted for the player and who knows; perhaps this will be the springboard for a lot more success at poker tournaments around the world. Sometimes in life you just need to get the first one done under your belt and after that, life begins to a whole lot easier!
The overall prize pool managed to get beyond the £100,000 mark and there were 104 players involved in the NLHE Turbo event. It was a Canadian 1-2 in this event with Sam Greenwood being the runner-up tucked in behind Greenwood.

It was not as if Benger let this triumph get to his head though and as he walked away with a big cheque and a great sense of satisfaction, he was already making plans for his next assault. For Benger, this was to be the £10,300 High Roller event which was scheduled to get started at 4pm on the 14th of March so who knows, by the time you are reading this, he may well have been a winner once again. Never mind the High Roller event, when you get on a roll in life, it is sometimes best to sit back and enjoy the ride!

Victoria Coren Provides More Than Poker Support

Victoria CorenWomen have to stick together these days, especially when they are taking part in a male dominated environment. There are still plenty of men that stick to an old school belief that women have no business playing poker in the major tournaments but thankfully these opinions are dying down. They are still around but the outspoken and outdated opinions are becoming quieter as the weeks, months and years pass. The only thing that a poker player should be judged on is their talent but that is not quite the world we live in!

Anyway, it is always good to see a new female face in amongst the traditional faces and the established female poker players who know what the industry is like can usually be relied upon to keep an eye out for the new poker players. In the case of Victoria Coren, this will come easy to her because she comes across as being an absolutely delightful woman. Sure she takes no prisoners at the poker table but in her many TV performances, she comes as charming, witty and very intelligent, which you wouldn’t think if half of her poker opponents were dumped on mainstream television.

Beaten by the poker flush

Unsurprisingly, Victoria Coren was front and centre in the PokerStars London event and this turned out to be a great blessing for Leo Margets, the Spanish poker star. Leo is the newest recruit to the PokerStars team and she has found herself in front of the watching media and banks of TV cameras a lot in the past few days. She has handled all of this tremendously well but it seems as though she didn’t manage to handle the toilets in the Vic so well. Leo managed to get herself stuck in one of the toilets but thankfully Victoria Coren was able to come to her rescue and set her free.

It was good that Victoria was able to lend a poker hand to her team-mate and it may have been one of the most uncomfortable times that Leo has had a problem with a flush at a poker event! It just goes to show that even the brightest stars can have the most mundane problems at times but Leo managed to bounce back well and didn’t let the embarrassment affect her performance or impact at the poker table. The Main Event at the EPT London event is still on-going and the players are still taking part at their own convenience!

Pesonen Delivers A Fine Poker Finnish

Lauri PesonenWhen it comes to delivering a perfect poker finish, you should be able to rely on a Finnish person and that was definitely the case for Event #11 at the EPT9 London event. There was a buy-in of £2,100 for the event but given that there was as total prize pool of £114,460, there was certainly a lot for the 59 players to get excited about. The top 8 players all got a fine return for the involvement in the event but it was Lauri Pesonen that triumphed.

Pesonen was up against Joao Barbosa, the EPT champion and both players came away from the table with a lot to celebrate. Not only does Pesonen get to class himself as a champion, he picked up £40,060 or his triumph. Barbosa in second place only walked away with £25,190 but that was enough to push his live tournament earnings up to the massive total of $1,426,238. That is the sort of poker money that will make anyone feel proud of themselves but more importantly than that, Barbosa has now moved into second place with respect to the all-time earnings of Portuguese poker players.

Big money on offer for all poker players

A Bulgarian player finished third with Vladimir Velikov claiming £14,880 with US player Scott Seiver bagging over £10,000 for his efforts. That little amount of money may be minute compared to the $2m plus prize that Seiver bagged after taking the PCA 2013 Super High Roller prize. You expect a big prize to be on offer when you are involved with a high roller event but becoming an overnight millionaire is definitely the dream when it comes to playing poker.

EPT LogoThe other finishes in the top with went to Marc-Andrew Ladouceur from Canada, who took home a prize of just over £8,000. In sixth place was Sam Greenwood from Canada who claimed £5,720. In seventh place was the Kuwaiti poker player Salman Behbehani who received just over £5,000 for his efforts. There was UK representation in 8th place as Roberto Romanello claimed £4,580.

The Main Events of these poker tournaments will inevitably grab the headlines and provide the highlights but reputations can be earned and developed in the minor events too. Lauri Pesonen will definitely look back on his time in London as being well spent, even if he never got around to seeing all the major tourist attractions that Finnish people look to see when in the English capital.

Hail The Champion Of Champions

Richard EvansNo matter the activity, any competition that pits the best against the best is well worth watching. Football fans have the Champions League and the World Cup, X has Y and when it comes to poker, a great battle of the champions took place on Monday evening in London. The UKIPT Champion of Champions event took place and the grand winner was the Welsh wizard Richard Evans. Evans booked his place amongst the best players due to succeeding in the UKIPT Dublin event back in May of last year. That seems like such a long time ago but Evans proved that he has consistency in his poker play by triumphing once again when the chips were down… on the table.

The win brought about a great bonus for Evans who tool voluntarily redundancy from his work in January. This will come in rather handy because he will need a lot of spare time later on in the year as his success gets him entry to Season 4 of the UKIPT events. The first stop is Marbella but it seems as though Evans will some explaining to do when he heads to the continent for the event. Not because some players will be worrying about why the UKIPT event is taking place away from the UK and Ireland but Evans will be on poker duty when his wife hits 40. Firstly, you can probably bet that Evans gets pulled up by his wife for disclosing her age and of course, he will then be in trouble for being away. He’ll need to win and make sure that he brings her back a big present!

No success two nights in a row for Sergio Aido

Evans grabbed the Season 4 passport prize but Sergio Aido who clinched the UKIPT London event on Sunday night struggled to perform two nights in a row. Perhaps Aido was celebrating his London triumph was a bit too much but if that was the case, not to worry because he was soon out of the tournament, giving him plenty of time to recover! Robert Baguley finished in second place behind Evans while Emmett Mullin finished in 3rd. The remaining places went to Nicolau Villa-Lobos who finished fourth, Wotjek Brazanty who finished fifth, Thomas Finneran finished 6th, 7th place went to Dara O’Kearney, Chris Ferguson came in 8th and of course, Sergio Aido was in 9th position.

With the start of the next season of the UKIPT taking place in June, there is time for players to relax but there are always plenty of other places for poker players to play in between times.

Launch Night For ISPT Heads To Dusk Till Dawn

ISPT LogoWhile the initial announcements about the International Stadiums Poker Tour were exciting, there were plenty of doubts raised about whether the proposed events would go ahead as planned. Poker players have had to sit through a lot of false dawns in their time and this means that there is a natural air of cynicism about any event that promises so much. Let’s face it, any poker player in the United Kingdom that also loves football would have instantly be drawn to an event that gives them the chance of playing at Wembley. The home of English football in the year that the FA celebrates its 150th anniversary and hosts the Champions League final is going to be a massive event. It is not just a great location for the English, Scottish and Welsh fans have descended on the English national stadium with their national teams and Celtic are the only Scottish team to have played at Wembley, triumphing in the 2009 Wembley Cup. All of this means that Wembley is a stadium that means something to football fans all across Britain and the chance to play poker in the stadium is a highly enticing affair.

This was why there was great relief when it was announced that Dusk Till Dawn was working alongside the ISPT because poker players in the UK trusts what DTD provides. Further proof of the tie-in comes along with the exclusive launch party that DTD is hosting on the 15th of March at the Crystal Room in the May Fair hotel for the ISPT.

DTD brings confidence to big poker event

Dusk Till Dawn Poker Club

The fact that DTD have signed agreement s to licence, operate, promote and guarantee the Wembley event means that poker players can look forward to the event with greater confidence. The famous stadium event is scheduled to begin on the 31st of March and it will carry on through until the 5th of June. It is reported that the layout and structure of the event will be similar to the Main Event in the WSOP tour.

The launch party is bound to be a massive event but it is an in invitation only deal. There will be a D set by Antonio Vendone and the DTD girls will be in attendance alongside the Martini Glass dancers. Every guest will receive free drinks as well as plenty of information about the ISPT event. There is sure to be attendances by the great and the good of the UK poker community and if you have received an invite, there is a need to RSVP by Wednesday the 13th of March.

Poker A Big Part Of New 24 Hour Casino

Grosvenor Casino ReadingWe all live busy lives these days and that is why it is great to have so many options available around the clock. Some people work shifts that sees them having leisure time when most of the country is fast asleep, some people have responsibilities that limit their free time and let’s face it, some people much prefer the night time to the day time. Online casinos and online poker rooms ensure that there will always be an option for people looking to have an enjoyable time with their favourite games but when it comes to social interaction and having fun, an actual casino is hard to beat.

Play poker around the clock

This is why the residents of Reading will be delighted to learn that there is a new 24 hour Grosvenor G Casino officially opened in their local area. With 10 poker tables included in the set-up, poker fans will have plenty of opportunities to play their favourite game at a time that suits them. With video poker options likely to be part of the electronic gaming offerings too, there is undoubtedly going to be a lot of action and excitement on offer for poker players in the Reading area.

There is a lot to look out for on entering

Manager Chris Green

When you first enter the casino you will be met with restaurants and bars so it is obvious that the casino is trying to offer something for the whole community but as you move further in, there is a lot more on offer. The casino, which cost over £6m to construct, has 30 electronic gaming tables and 17 gaming tables in addition to the 10 poker tables but that is not all that is on offer. If you like a lighter side of gaming, there is also an opportunity to play electronic Mecca Bingo games. Perhaps you’ll want to take your mum or gran along to enjoy bingo while you slip off and fit in a few hands of poker!

While poker is not the main element for these casinos for the majority of visitors, the fact that there are 10 poker tables will hopefully provide poker players with somewhere they can play and rely on. The rising popularity of online poker means that there is a greater fan base for these games and it is likely that more players will be enticed with the poker table. Regular poker table players may have to tolerate players who play at a slower pace than what they would regular come up against but the chance of coming up against more fish that could provide an opportunity to make some money will definitely catch the interest of many serious poker players in Reading.

Phil The Power Taylor Takes To Poker

Phil TaylorWhen it comes to names like Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld, darts is obviously the activity that springs to mind. These two heavyweights have been at the top of the darts game for decades and when they face off against each other, there is always something worth looking out for. The two have had their disagreements in their time with both making complaints to each other about their attitude and behaviour but they always seem to fall back into friendship. When it comes to their sporting rivalry, they will have a lot to fight over but at the moment, it seems as though the two are on a good level with respect to respect!

Can darts legends be poker greats?

They will be facing off in a darts exhibition in Bradford but of greater interest to UK poker fans is that the two will also be facing off against each other at the poker table. Given that these darts legends spend most of their spare time practising and honing their darts skills, it remains to be seen if they have developed the poker skills and understanding to be great poker players too but the event at the Gala Casino in the Leisure Exchange at Vicar Lane in Bradford will be one that is well worth watching.

Eric BristowAlso on the bill alongside two current darts legends is major darts legend and reality TV star Eric Bristow. For those who grew up with the golden era of darts in the 1970s and 80s, Eric Bristow remains one of the biggest heroes you can find in the world of darts. This means that there should be an excited and noisy crowd at the event with the poker event being a huge attraction on a night which should be filled with fun and excitement.
