A Great Poker Weekend For Michael Wright

Michael WrightWhen it comes to a Monday morning, many people will have a slight fear about checking their bank account. After all, if you experienced a fun Friday or Saturday you may have spent a lot more money than you would have hoped to. Of course, some people get a nice feeling when checking their ATM on a Monday if they never spent as much money as they feared or indeed if they managed to behave themselves over a weekend. One man who has no concerns about checking his bank account for the next few days is Michael Wright.

This is because Michael was the big winner at the Boylepoker.com International Poker Open. The weekend was the latest in a string of poker success stories at the Aspers Casino in Stratford but Michael Wright is definitely the man who comes out of the latest event with the most to smile about. There were plenty of great poker players at the final table but it was Wright that managed to pick up over 10 grand for his troubles!

In 9th position and picking up £1,445 for his weekend of poker action was Ken San. He was swiftly followed out of the event by Asif Yusuf, who received £1,930 for an 8th place. In 7th was Kirit Patel who managed to pick up £2,415 for coming in 7th and Andrew Brekecz was in 6th place, with £2,895 for his trouble.

A five hand deal at the final table

IPO 2013 Final Table

The final 5 players made a five-hand deal, taking some of the pressure off of players with respect to financial earnings but there was no let-up in the determination of the players to win. Saulius Tumosa was out in fifth place with £5,900 to take home. In fourth spot was Sandeep Phull who bagged £6,900. In third place was Paul Wimbledon who received £7,900 while Andrew Sotiriou received £8,900 for his second placed finish.

Wright was the clear favourite heading into the head-up thanks to his massive chip lead. Sotiriou held 700,000 chips but this was nothing in comparison to Wright who was able to call upon 4,350,000 chips! That is the sort of lead you don’t mind defending and although Sotiriou played bravely, there really was only going to be one winner at that stage. So it proved with Wright finishing the contest in great style, allowing him to enjoy the last of his weekend.

Tony G Knows How To Grab Publicity

Tony GTV producers know that sometimes the best form of entertainment is not all about getting the best people. Anyone that needs reminding about this only has to think about Big Brother. With a few notable exceptions, the heavenly Orlaith McAllister being one of them, the people who appeared on Big Brother are the sort of people you would cross the street to avoid if you saw them heading towards you.

However, they certainly made for great TV at times and this was possibly the thinking behind the filming of the PartyPoker Big Game VII in the Casino Barcelona. This event was being filmed on behalf of Sky, who plan on showing it at some point during the summer. When there is no football on the channel every hour of the day they have to fill their air time any way they can and poker will definitely help! You can also bet that they’ll be working Charlotte Jackson a lot harder than they are now to get more people into poker but that is all for another time.

If they were hoping for controversy, they certainly got it when Tony G started to wind up all and sundry around him with Tobey Lewis, IveyPoker pro, getting the worst of it.

Big rants make for great TV

Tony G obviously felt that Lewis was going to straddle in order to raise the stakes but when he didn’t, he was quick to criticise the player. Tony G started shout shouting at Lewis;

What are you doing? What’s going on? There are no scammers here. You’re a disgrace. You should get your chips, get up and leave.

As everyone else started to look rather embarrassed Tony continued, roping in Warren Lush, the organiser by saying;

He’s a disgrace. Where do you get these jerks? Where are these nits from?

Tony G then returned his ire to Lewis, saying;

What is IveyPoker? Is it another scam? Ivey is a gambler; you can’t put that logo on. You are representing a brand that’s all about gambling and giving people a chance. He’s saving his €100 for the bus fare home.

Warren Lush

Some people like to get headlines and attention for the sake of it and Tony G is one of these people. However, at this moment in time, Tony seems to be working rather hard at promoting his sports betting site and casino site. Tony made a big announcement in March 2013 that he was leaving his sponsorship deal with PartyPoker. This had been a good arrangement for Tony and the online poker room with both parties benefiting but it seems as though Tony was facing up to a conflict of interests. It wouldn’t be great to promote PartyPoker when you spend the rest of your time telling people to spend their hard earned cash on Tonybet.com and Tonybet Casino!

As of yet there is no online poker site for the site, although there are mobile elements and you cannot think that Tony is missing a trick here. Perhaps there is something on its way and Tony will soon unveil a poker site where people can come from far and wide to challenge him and the rest of his team. You have to think that there is a challenge between Tonybet Poker and the IveyPoker players along the lines somewhere!

Poker Tournament Winner Still Stacking Shelves In Tesco

Ben FoxwellWhile it can be easy to focus on the big poker players that manage to win a life changing amount of cash in one game of poker, this is not the case for the majority of poker players. Even the poker players that do manage to grab the adulation and praise that goes with winning a major national poker tournament will often find that as soon as the adrenaline rush dies down, life goes back to normal and there is nothing else for it but to knuckle down.

In the case of recent GUKPT Student Poker Championship winner, Ben Foxwell, this is understandable. At this stage, his studies are more important but it is not as if the prize money was overwhelming either. It was a great boost and the chance to pick up other prizes such as guaranteed entry to future GUKPT events will have been exciting too but on the whole, the buzz of the triumph has died down rather quickly for the 21 year old Foxwell.

The fact that he has recently been interviewed by his local news site, the Gloucestershire Gazette, as opposed to some glamorous lads mag or even of the more popular online poker sites indicates that this is a low level of success. However, it is a good level of success and there is no doubt that Foxwell can take a lot of pride in his achievement. From his comments to his local paper, he seems to have kept his head on the ground with respect to the win.

Poker success can become attractive

It turns out that the poker win was not the first time that Foxwell has claimed glory with poker, as he explained.

I’ve had a couple of $1,000 wins online, but nothing as big as this. I thought I may be in with a chance early evening on the second day, when I became chip leader for the first time, although shortly after lost a couple of pots.

Getting success like this at an early age can give you the impetus to make this your main focal point but it seems as though Foxwell is happy to leave poker as a hobby and is content to continue with his studies in sports science and cardiology. As for the financial impact of the win, he was happy to say;

I also work in Tesco, so it’s nice to have some extra money.

Tesco Logo

As Tesco would say, “Every Little Helps” and the money made from the Student Poker success will hopefully help Foxwell to have some fun while still focusing on his studies. Who knows, it may even have bought him the opportunity to take a shift or two off!

Aspers Casino Is Busy With Poker Once Again

Aspers Casino Westfield Stratford CityAnother week and another big poker event being held at the Aspers Casino in Stratford. This week it is the turn of the Boylepoker.com International Poker Open (IPO) London event and the poker tournament is already building nicely to what should be a big weekend of poker action. The Day 1A of the event took place on Wednesday night and these events are really becoming drawn-out affairs for keen poker players. Having more attempts to qualify for the major events is definitely going to be of benefit to most poker players though and you won’t find too many people moaning about the increased opportunities.

Then again, you would get some people moaning but that’ll be down to the folk who never quite managed to qualify after playing on Wednesday night! There were a grand total of 86 players taking part in the big event and with a buy-in of £200+£25 there was a reasonable price to pay. Getting close to 100 poker players on a Wednesday night is not a bad haul and you can bet the numbers will pick up as the event marches towards the weekend.

A lot of poker players go home disappointed

Of the 86 players who started playing poker, it was left to 32 players to go through and make their way to Day 2 of the event which takes place on Saturday. For some of the 54 players that failed to make it through, Wednesday night will have represented their only opportunity to make it through to the weekend but there will definitely have been some players that decided Thursday and Friday provided fresh opportunities to bounce back and have another go at making progress in the big tournament. It is not as if the organisers will mind because poker players that want to re-enter will have to pay the money again so it all helps to increase the player pool and bring money into the big event.

Boylepoker.com IPO 2013One player that was able to relax on Thursday and Friday was Mihal Antone. This is down to the fact that Antone finished Wednesday night as the chip leader with an impressive 99,000 chips at the end of the play. This total was 14,000 more than second ranked player Andrew Berkecz who finished up with 85,000 chips after his play on Wednesday night. In third place was Huseyin Houssein, who lead for a large part of the evening before ending up with 74,300 chips. 59,400 chips were enough for Yen Nenh to take fourth place and in fifth position was Sarah Holt who managed to bag 54,500 chips for her play on Wednesday night.

The rest of the top 10 was filled out with Stefania Toader, Keith Miller, Mats Rosen, Renier Zyl and Lee Dang in 10th position and 48,500 chips. These 10 players and 22 more are definitely back at Aspers Casino in Stratford when the IPO 2013 continues on Saturday but there will be plenty of other poker players joining them for the big Day 2 poker event.

Great Night At Manchester Confidential Poker Freezeout

Manchester 235 Poker LoungeWhile the big name poker events and tournaments will always grab the headlines and attention, there are plenty of great poker opportunities for players up and down the country taking place all the time. If you have a genuine interest in poker and you want to get out and play against real opponents, there has never been a better time for you to do so.

One such place where you can enjoy a great poker game is at the poker room of the Manchester 235 venue and they have been having success with Freezeout events. There was a big Christmas Confidential Freezeout that got everyone buzzing and it meant that there were plenty of folk looking forward to the Spring event which inevitably followed. In total just less than 100 poker players were involved with the event and there was a prize pool of over £2,300 on offer at the event.

Competition and compromises at the final table

The final ten players at the poker event were Tim Wagner who received £30 for his efforts and in ninth place was Chris Evans who also received £30 for his troubles. In eighth place was Sam Kalu who grabbed £60 and in seventh place was Royce Joseph who picked up £90. In sixth place was Daniel Shapiro who earned himself £130 and Jeff Thomas came in fifth, picking up £170. In fourth place was Angela Houghton who received £240.

David HerrityThe final three players all came to an agreement that they would take £500 each and would then play for an additional £75. The third placed player should have received £50, the second placed player should have earned £480 and the winner should have picked up £745. David Herrity was the real winner of the tournament but in financial terms, he was the big loser as he dropped a lot of money compared to what he would have received if they played without an agreement. Second placed Nick Bowyer was slightly better off, picking up £500 for his efforts rather than the £480 he would have been due for being a runner up.

In some ways, the player that finished third, Mihai Pop was the real winner. Third placed should have earned a prize of £350 but there was a £500 reward coming to Mihai thanks to the agreement made. The praise and confidence that comes with winning a poker tournament is obviously a key factor so in that sense David will still be delighted at winning the big poker event but you just wonder if David and Nick will be feeling a little bit jealous of the way that Mihai managed to do much better with respect to money coming in compared to money that should have been brought in!

Dusk Till Dawn Bringing Monte Carlo To Nottingham

Dusk Till Dawn Poker ClubThere is always something of interest taking place at the Dusk Till Dawn and aside from being the driving force behind the big poker tournament heading to Wembley in May, there is always something that will catch your eye. This weekend looks set to be another brilliant weekend of poker at the Nottingham club and thankfully there is still time to get involved if you feel as though some poker fun will help to make your life a lot more enjoyable this weekend.

Day 1A has already taken place but this was an online leg while Day 1B and Day 1C will take place on Thursday and Friday at the actual club. The event will run all the way through until Sunday the 21st of April and play will continue it is all done and dusted with the Monte Carlo tournament. There may be a lot of focus on the actual Monte Carlo tournament at the moment thanks to the tennis event where once again British hopes are resting on Andy Murray but let’s be honest, Monte Carlo is a place that is always going to generate an interest.

There is a lot of poker money to play for this weekend

Anyone looking to get involved with the event should know that it has a buy-in of £1,000+£100 but there is plenty of money up for grabs with this event. There will be a prize pool of £500,000 and there should be a first prize of £90,000. This is definitely worth spending a weekend in Nottingham and any poker player that is at a loose end this weekend would be advised to check out what was on offer at the DTD club.

Monte CarloAll players will pick up 30,000 poker chips to start off with and the tournament features a blind structure that will increase every hour. The players that battle through the 3 opening days will be in the mix on Saturday when Day 2 properly begins. The scheduled start time for Saturday’s start is 13.00 which is still a early start time for many poker players. There will be some poker players looking to grab the US games online that may just be crawling to their bed at one o’clock in the afternoon so there will be a need to be alert a lot earlier than they would usually expect to be.

On Sunday, the start time is again 1pm and play will continue through to the end. Nottingham may not have the glamour or prestige of Monte Carlo but this weekend you can bet that there will plenty of poker players that are keen to be in Nottingham as opposed to anywhere else in the world.

Toby Lewis Tops The GPI UK Rankings

Global Poker Index LogoThere has been a fair bit of chart controversy in the UK of late. The death of Margaret Thatcher has certainly caused a great deal of controversy with opposing viewpoints taking polar stances but rather surprisingly, the battle between both sides has been played out in the charts! Those people who hated the policies of Thatcher and who believed she ruined lives and communities around the world were in no mood to hold back when her death was announced. Amongst the impromptu street parties, there was a celebration of “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead”, a song from the Wizard of OZ film.

Very quickly, a campaign grew to have the song downloaded from iTunes and before you know it, it was rocketing up the charts. So much that so on Sunday it hit number two on the UK Top 40! The BBC refused to play the song in full, playing a snippet and then providing a news story about Thatcher’s death. This was deemed by many to be a cop-out and similarities were drawn to the way that The Sex Pistols were suspiciously kept off the number one spot in the charts during the Silver Jubilee in 1977. There has been a fair bit of controversy in the charts and this meant that a change at the top of the poker charts for UK players may have gone unnoticed.

All hail the new UK poker leader

There is a new leader in the UK section of the Global Poker Index with Toby Lewis now sitting in the number one spot. The player often known as “810ofclubs” when he plays online overtook Roberto Romanello to be the poker leader in the UK. Over in Ireland, there was no change at the top of the poker hit parade as Dermot Blain remains in the number one position.

Toby LewisToby Lewis was able to grab the number one spot thanks to a number of big cash ins of late. Finishing in sixth position in the 2013 WPT LA Poker Classic was always going to make a splash. This win managed to help Lewis to earn $193,560 as Lewis stayed in the field longer than more than 500 players. There was a hope that he could add the title to the EPT title he picked up back in 2010 but sadly this was not to be. However, it was still a rather impressive showing by Lewis. This was followed up by 36th place in the Main Event of the EPT London event. This may not be the sort of finish that grabs the headlines but with a £12,500 prize winding its way home, it took the overall prize fund picked up by Lewis to be a staggering $1,787,313. This is an excellent amount of money to grab in live tournaments so kudos to Lewis for achieving this success and it is easy to see why he has jumped into number one position.

The nature of Lewis’ success can be measured in he managed to overtake Romanello even though Romanello achieved three cash finishes at the EPT event. It is tough at the top in the UK poker industry but this can only be a positive thing for poker players and poker fans. The pressure is now on Toby Lewis, who recently joined Team Ivey Poker, to remain at the top but Romanello will be pushing him hard!

Take A Poker Gamble With Bolton Wanderers Players

Bolton Wanderers LogoThis is the time of the football season when many clubs have to take a gamble. League titles, promotion places, play-off spots and avoiding the drop, not to mention cup finals, are all at stake and sometimes you have to be brave to achieve success. Sunderland were looking in a very bad way at the bottom of the Premier League but after that thumping 3-0 win over Newcastle at the Sports Direct Stadium, the appointment of Paolo Di Canio is looking like it was a very sensible move. If the Italian can keep Sunderland in the top flight, the gamble will have been all worthwhile and the club will be able to look forward to next season.

One club who is also looking to take a gamble this week is Bolton Wanderers. This is not bad news for boss Dougie Freedman, he can relax safe in the knowledge that he is still wanted by the board of directors; it is the players who will be taking the gamble alongside the fans.

This is down to the fact that the club is running a poker night on Thursday night, in association with 188bet.com, sponsors of the club. It is a charity poker night and funds raised will go towards Hearts and Goals, the campaign the club is backing this season. When fans turn up at the ground, they want to see some of the top players and this is an area where they have no concerns or worries about what is on offer on Thursday evening.

Plenty of Bolton stars will be in attendance for poker night

Fabrice Muamba

The club has promised that a number of first-team players and coaching staff members will be on hand for the Thursday event, which kicks off at 7.30pm. There is a £12 entrance and registration fee and £4 from each registration fee will go towards Hearts and Goals. The money will be used to buy defibrillators and to help raise awareness and knowledge of cardiac arrests and CPR.

This is obviously something that is very close to Bolton Wanderers Football Club after what happened to Fabrice Muamba at White Hart Lane last season. Amazingly, Muamba has made a great recovery and while he is not able to play football, he is able to enjoy a happy and healthy life with his family. Muamba has issued a statement supporting the night, which reads;

I would like to thank the club for hosting the event and 188 for the donations. All monies raised make a difference, whether in allowing us to educate people on how to give effective CPR or providing defibrillators in public places.

Even though there are still a few tickets left for the big evening, the interest in the event has encouraged the organisers to create an online event supporting the same cause. This will be played on Sunday the 28th of August, giving poker players another opportunity to play for great Bolton Wanderers prizes and to help a worthwhile cause.

GUKPT Didsbury Main Event Clinched By Eirimas Livonas

Eirimas LivonasSometimes you can hit a run of form where everything goes for you. The trick is to either make this run of form last as long as possible or to enter as many competitions and tournaments as you can when you are on fire to ensure that you make the most of your good fortune and skill. When Eirimas Livonas looks back on his poker career, he may think that April 2013 was the best time of his career. The challenge is now on for him to make his good run of form last for as long as possible but at the moment, he is probably too busy celebrating to worry about that sort of approach to life!

April was already pretty successful for Eirimas due to his success at the APAT World Championships. His success at the Main Event was a great feat and perhaps that gave him an added sense of confidence coming into the GUKPT event in Didsbury. Whatever the reason, Eirimas managed to claim the Main Event title and this seen him take away £22,570 from the event. That is exactly the sort of poker prize that people are interested in winning so well done to him for his big achievement.

Chip leader held his nerve and his lead

Eirimas was the chip leader coming into the final table but this is no guarantee of success. He did have a major chip lead but given the erratic nature of poker play that Livonas delivers, he was as likely to be caught out as he was to push on with his lead. Fortunately for him and unfortunately for the rest of the final table, there was success on the cards.

The first player to exit from the final table was Matt Davenport who went out in ninth with £1,530. Following him was Alex Zeligman in eight position who bagged £2,105. In seventh position was Amir Dandanfard, who received £2,870. In sixth place was Andy Booth who managed to receive £3,630 for his efforts. In fifth place was Tom Hall who received £4m785 and in fourth position was Justin Devonport, who took home £6,120. In third place was Ben Winsor, who received £9,945 and Yani Yanev broke through the £10,000 barrier in second place with a prize of £15,870.

Grosvenor UK Poker TourYanev had played the key role in busting Devonport and Winsor but in the end, he didn’t have enough about him to overcome Eirimas Livonas who is experiencing a great run of form and success at the moment.

The next GUKPT event will take place in Stockton at the start of May at the Grosvenor G Casino and no doubt there will be a lot of excitement for that event as it grows nearer. It isn’t that far away so all poker players keen to emulate the success of Eirimas Livonas would be advised to hone their skills quickly and make sure that they head to Stockton at the start of next month.

Poker Host Kara Scott Engaged To Be Married

Kara Scott and Giovanni RizzoKara Scott may officially be Canadian but due to a 10 year stint in the UK working in the media, there are many people who are proud to root for her and wish her all the best. These people will be delighted to learn that Kara has just announced that she is engaged and all the better, it is being kept within the poker community. The popular poker host and partypoker professional Scott has said yes to a proposal of marriage from Giovanni Rizzo. The couple have been together for more than a year, which may not seem like that long a term, but life is a bit like poker, sometimes you get a feeling when you need to go all in.

The marriage proposal came about when both players were competing in the World Poker Tour Venice Grand Poker. This was a tournament where Scott performed rather well and she had genuine hopes about being a contender for the final table. Sadly, she was knocked out in 13th place, a finish which still saw her receive €7,200 for her troubles. Of course, we now know that she returned from Venice with a bit more than just money to be happy about! Venice is supposedly the city where Scott and Rizzo first kissed so there is a nice sense of symmetry about the proposal.

Italy is the home for the popular poker couple

While marriage is a major step, the couple have already been building towards a proper commitment. These days, sharing a home is a major commitment and the duo have not long moved in together in Italy. Like most poker players, they will spend a lot of time on the road but hopefully there will be plenty of events where they can travel together and spend plenty of their down time together. This may lead to some interesting moments around the poker table but given that they are both professionals, you can bet that they will be doing what is right!

Gioco Digitale LogoScott is a partypoker professional while Rizzo is sponsored by Gioco Digitale, which is an Italian poker site which is owned by bwin. No doubt the different companies will play their part in keeping both players on their toes and ensuring that there is no collusion when they end up facing each other at the poker table. Even if this doesn’t happen too often, you know how fate often intervenes to ensure that these occurrences take place.

Well lads, that is another good looking female poker player off the market but as you usually find with online poker, there are plenty more fish in the sea! Of course, this refers to the fish poker players that experienced poker players hunt down in the hope of claiming easy money.
