When it comes to a Monday morning, many people will have a slight fear about checking their bank account. After all, if you experienced a fun Friday or Saturday you may have spent a lot more money than you would have hoped to. Of course, some people get a nice feeling when checking their ATM on a Monday if they never spent as much money as they feared or indeed if they managed to behave themselves over a weekend. One man who has no concerns about checking his bank account for the next few days is Michael Wright.
This is because Michael was the big winner at the Boylepoker.com International Poker Open. The weekend was the latest in a string of poker success stories at the Aspers Casino in Stratford but Michael Wright is definitely the man who comes out of the latest event with the most to smile about. There were plenty of great poker players at the final table but it was Wright that managed to pick up over 10 grand for his troubles!
In 9th position and picking up £1,445 for his weekend of poker action was Ken San. He was swiftly followed out of the event by Asif Yusuf, who received £1,930 for an 8th place. In 7th was Kirit Patel who managed to pick up £2,415 for coming in 7th and Andrew Brekecz was in 6th place, with £2,895 for his trouble.
A five hand deal at the final table
The final 5 players made a five-hand deal, taking some of the pressure off of players with respect to financial earnings but there was no let-up in the determination of the players to win. Saulius Tumosa was out in fifth place with £5,900 to take home. In fourth spot was Sandeep Phull who bagged £6,900. In third place was Paul Wimbledon who received £7,900 while Andrew Sotiriou received £8,900 for his second placed finish.
Wright was the clear favourite heading into the head-up thanks to his massive chip lead. Sotiriou held 700,000 chips but this was nothing in comparison to Wright who was able to call upon 4,350,000 chips! That is the sort of lead you don’t mind defending and although Sotiriou played bravely, there really was only going to be one winner at that stage. So it proved with Wright finishing the contest in great style, allowing him to enjoy the last of his weekend.
TV producers know that sometimes the best form of entertainment is not all about getting the best people. Anyone that needs reminding about this only has to think about Big Brother. With a few notable exceptions, the heavenly Orlaith McAllister being one of them, the people who appeared on Big Brother are the sort of people you would cross the street to avoid if you saw them heading towards you.
While it can be easy to focus on the big poker players that manage to win a life changing amount of cash in one game of poker, this is not the case for the majority of poker players. Even the poker players that do manage to grab the adulation and praise that goes with winning a major national poker tournament will often find that as soon as the adrenaline rush dies down, life goes back to normal and there is nothing else for it but to knuckle down.
Another week and another big poker event being held at the Aspers Casino in Stratford. This week it is the turn of the Boylepoker.com International Poker Open (IPO) London event and the poker tournament is already building nicely to what should be
One player that was able to relax on Thursday and Friday was Mihal Antone. This is down to the fact that Antone finished Wednesday night as the chip leader with an impressive 99,000 chips at the end of the play. This total was 14,000 more than second ranked player Andrew Berkecz who finished up with 85,000 chips after his play on Wednesday night. In third place was Huseyin Houssein, who lead for a large part of the evening before ending up with 74,300 chips. 59,400 chips were enough for Yen Nenh to take fourth place and in fifth position was Sarah Holt who managed to bag 54,500 chips for her play on Wednesday night.
While the big name poker events and tournaments will always grab the headlines and attention, there are plenty of great poker opportunities for players up and down the country taking place all the time. If you have a genuine interest in poker and you want to get out and play against real opponents, there has never been a better time for you to do so.
The final three players all came to an agreement that they would take £500 each and would then play for an additional £75. The third placed player should have received £50, the second placed player should have earned £480 and the winner should have picked up £745. David Herrity was the real winner of the tournament but in financial terms, he was the big loser as he dropped a lot of money compared to what he would have received if they played without an agreement. Second placed Nick Bowyer was slightly better off, picking up £500 for his efforts rather than the £480 he would have been due for being a runner up.
There is always something of interest taking place at the Dusk Till Dawn and aside from being
All players will pick up 30,000 poker chips to start off with and the tournament features a blind structure that will increase every hour. The players that battle through the 3 opening days will be in the mix on Saturday when Day 2 properly begins. The scheduled start time for Saturday’s start is 13.00 which is still a early start time for many poker players. There will be some poker players looking to grab the US games online that may just be crawling to their bed at one o’clock in the afternoon so there will be a need to be alert a lot earlier than they would usually expect to be.
There has been a fair bit of chart controversy in the UK of late. The death of Margaret Thatcher has certainly caused a great deal of controversy with opposing viewpoints taking polar stances but rather surprisingly, the battle between both sides has been played out in the charts! Those people who hated the policies of Thatcher and who believed she ruined lives and communities around the world were in no mood to hold back when her death was announced. Amongst the impromptu street parties, there was a celebration of “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead”, a song from the Wizard of OZ film.
Toby Lewis was able to grab the number one spot thanks to a number of big cash ins of late. Finishing in sixth position in the 2013 WPT LA Poker Classic was always going to make a splash. This win managed to help Lewis to earn $193,560 as Lewis stayed in the field longer than more than 500 players. There was a hope that he could add the title to the EPT title he picked up back in 2010 but sadly this was not to be. However, it was still a rather impressive showing by Lewis. This was followed up by 36th place in the Main Event of the EPT London event. This may not be the sort of finish that grabs the headlines but with a £12,500 prize winding its way home, it took the overall prize fund picked up by Lewis to be a staggering $1,787,313. This is an excellent amount of money to grab in live tournaments so kudos to Lewis for achieving this success and it is easy to see why he has jumped into number one position.
This is the time of the football season when many clubs have to take a gamble. League titles, promotion places, play-off spots and avoiding the drop, not to mention cup finals, are all at stake and sometimes you have to be brave to achieve success. Sunderland were looking in a very bad way at the bottom of the Premier League but after that thumping 3-0 win over Newcastle at the Sports Direct Stadium, the appointment of Paolo Di Canio is looking like it was a very sensible move. If the Italian can keep Sunderland in the top flight, the gamble will have been all worthwhile and the club will be able to look forward to next season.
Sometimes you can hit a run of form where everything goes for you. The trick is to either make this run of form last as long as possible or to enter as many competitions and tournaments as you can when you are on fire to ensure that you make the most of your good fortune and skill. When Eirimas Livonas looks back on his poker career, he may think that April 2013 was the best time of his career. The challenge is now on for him to make his good run of form last for as long as possible but at the moment, he is probably too busy celebrating to worry about that sort of approach to life!
Yanev had played the key role in busting Devonport and Winsor but in the end, he didn’t have enough about him to overcome Eirimas Livonas who is experiencing a great run of form and success at the moment.
Kara Scott may officially be Canadian but due to a 10 year stint in the UK working in the media, there are many people who are proud to root for her and wish her all the best. These people will be delighted to learn that Kara has just announced that she is engaged and all the better, it is being kept within the poker community. The popular poker host and partypoker professional Scott has said yes to a proposal of marriage from Giovanni Rizzo. The couple have been together for more than a year, which may not seem like that long a term, but life is a bit like poker, sometimes you get a feeling when you need to go all in.
Scott is a
