Over the weekend there will inevitably be a lot of focus on the WSOP-APAC Main Event which is scheduled to finish on Monday the 15th of April. As the working population in the UK were getting set up for what would hopefully be a fun-filled Friday, Day 2 of the Main Event was already well underway down under. The number of players still left in the tournament, as you would expect, was huge, making it impossible to predict how it will pan out. However, any UK poker fan having a fly check of the updates before 9.30am would have seen a familiar poker name up to his usual antics.
Charles Chua was being bounced out of the event and Sam Trickett was the main who bounced him to the rail. This success moved Trickett on to a level of around 55,000 chips. This is way short of the top of the leader board but with plenty of poker left to play, this is not a state that should be causing any alarm or panic at this moment in time!
Trickett has a long way to go
While Trickett is playing around with about 50,000 chips the top players have got a lot more to shout about. At around 9.30am UK time, the chip leader was Rupert Elder who carried 204,000 chips. Behind him was Erik Seidel who had 175,000 chips and then Victor Teng who carried 161,000 chips. In fourth place was Feroz Khan who had 160,000 chips and in fifth place was Phil Ivey. Ivey held 155,000 chips and was looking strong to continue in the Main Event. It is fair to say that Ivey has been having a whale of a time in the past week or so and he must be brimming with confidence at the moment.
There are plenty of observers that will say that Ivey is the best poker player around at the moment but on Wednesday down under, he managed to win the WSOP-APAC $2,200 Mixed Event. The man wins poker tournaments, that is no real surprise or shock and some would say that it is hardly news but there was a bigger element to come out of this victory. This win earned Ivey his ninth WSOP bracelet, pushing him closer to the top. If Ivey can pick up another poker bracelet, and not many people would bet against this, he will move to ten WSOP bracelets, the same level as Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson. This would see Ivey sitting in joint second place in all-time career bracelet wins and he would move closer to the overall leader.
Could Ivey become the bracelet leader?
Phil Hellmuth may be sitting rather pretty on 13 bracelets but the way things are going for Ivey, he may well be in the running to bag some more bracelets in the near future. He has also had some success in his private life of late with the Supreme Court of Nevada stating that ruling of Ivey’s court case will stand. This has hung over Ivey for a year and a half and the positive resolution for the poker player may have helped to put him in a more positive frame of mind for the WSOP-APAC event. It is not as if Ivey needs any further assistance when it comes to poker tournaments but to use the old saying, he may have won a watch and in turn, this helped him to bag another bracelet!
It’s good news for Phil but with Sam Trickett hanging on in there, there is still good news for UK poker fans looking for an interest in the WSOP-APAC Main Event. There are a couple of high profile poker events taking place in Manchester and London this weekend so if you want to get out and about, you can. We’ve looked at them on site in the past few days, so all the information you need is here and of course, there will be plenty of online poker events to look forward to too. UK players did rather well on PokerStars last Sunday and you can bet there will be plenty of players keen to emulate that success this weekend.
Wednesday is as good a time as any to start looking forward to the weekend’s activities. To be honest, Monday morning is probably as good a time as any to start looking forward to the next weekend but there is no doubt that many people like to get some days behind them before they start wishing their life away. As the middle point of the week, Wednesday feels as though you have put the Monday blues far behind you and the weekend starts to move into touching distance. Wednesday is far from being the ideal day of the week but if you love to play poker at the weekend, this is the day to start pulling your plans together.
This should be enough to get poker players excited but if you are looking for a different option, Leg 2 of the GUKPT tour will be taking place in Didsbury in Manchester. The event is already underway but it will start to get exciting this weekend. Thursday and Friday represent Day 1A and Day 1B of the event with Saturday representing Day 2 while Sunday is the Main Event Final Day.
Sports fans love it when there is a chance to see so many of their big name stars and heroes in the one place. For sports like football, tournaments like the Champions League are hugely exciting because they bring the best teams and the best players from around Europe into the one main competition. This is the sort of event that gets fans interested, which means that it gets TV companies interested. They then start the hype machine and before you know it, the Champions League has become the biggest sporting event in the world, probably even eclipsing the excitement and drama that comes along with the world cup.
There will also be a lot of good coming from the event in the fact that a large pot of money will make its way to the
This is one of those rare weekends in the United Kingdom where everyone goes a little bit mad for gambling. While there are people who look down on us gamers and gamblers at other points in the year when it comes to the Grand National, it is fair to say that Britain loves a flutter. The thought of horses being used in burgers has been one of the biggest stories of the year so far so it will be good to have a weekend where the horse focus is on the racing. Whatever your opinion on the Grand National is, and hopefully the improved safety measures brought in will result in fewer horse fatalities, there is no doubt that this is a major gaming event.
Those looking for live poker action a little closer to home will surely have an interest in Westernmania which is taking place at the Western Club in Acton, London from Friday evening. This may not leave you with a lot of time to get involved with the event but as there is a £250,000 guaranteed prize pool on offer, you will likely be able to shake yourself quickly into action. The final opening flight of the event is taking place on Friday evening so this really is the last call for the event.
While the lure and appeal of being a professional poker player and travelling the world will never diminish, it is not for everyone. There are more than enough people that like to enjoy poker as a hobby or past-time. There are plenty of folk that enjoy poker as a way of adding more fun to their life or giving them a break from the important things they have going on in their life. This is why even though it is inevitable that there will be a focus on the professional poker world, it is important to look at what is going on with the amateur poker community too.
There were also plenty of over events and poker tournaments held during the celebration which means that plenty of people ended the Easter weekend feeling the glow of being a winner. In the WCOAP Heads Up Championship, there were 64 players duking it out in a one versus one style to grab the crown. There was a lot of joy at Dusk Till Dawn in this event because Weswell Ellis, the eventual winner, is a regular player at the club. Weswell triumphed against Vikrum Mehta in the last match, earning himself £1,100 for the Heads Up winner. Mehta shouldn’t feel too down though because he received £700 for his second place finish and he also managed to come second in the WCOAP Seven Card Stud event. He could look at the weekend as one of near misses but he should take a lot of pride in his performance.
If you have been spending the Easter weekend enjoying chocolate and having some quiet time with friends and family, you may not be alone in that. After all, there is nothing better than having some quiet time to relax and unwind and this maybe explains why the poker action has not been so fast and furious over the past couple of days. Poker players can usually find a good excuse to slip off and enjoy the poker action at times but at big family events like Easter, that may not have been so easy.
One of the problems on looking back at poker events and tournaments that straddle the week into the weekend is that you often have to appraise performances before the final placings are announced. As we all know, a lot can happen before the final placings are announced and people who looked like sure-fire winners can often find themselves left with no money and a lot of disappointment. However, that is the nature of poker. The final table will always be the most important thing and the area that players should look to but if you can’t turn it on during the early days of an event, you’ll have no chance of making it through to the final places.
If you are thinking about spending your Easter break playing poker but don’t want to be stuck inside for all of the weekend, perhaps it is time to venture out into the world of poker tournaments. You don’t have to aim for the WSOP or WPT just yet although these events may be in the back of your mind. There are plenty of places to play poker with real people in the United Kingdom and this Easter weekend, there is a poker treat being served up by one of the biggest and best poker venues in the United Kingdom.
Other poker tournaments to look out for during the week include an Omaha tournament, a no limit Hold ‘Em Six Max tournament, a HORSE tournament and a championship based upon the heads-up. It is likely that there will be a big take-up for all of these events so if you are looking to get involved, sign up while there are still spaces available. You will also find that there will be a lot of interest in the World Amateur Poker Championship event and again, if you have a particular interest in this event, sign up early.
In the past year, there have been a number of great moments taking place in Stratford but if you are a big poker fan, the action this weekend will have taken some beating. The Aspers Casino in Stratford City was the venue for the PartyPoker.com Premier League VI event and there were plenty of players with an interest in the event. Whether you were there, watched it on a delayed internet stream or are just reading about it now, this was another massive poker win for a player that keeps on coming back for more success.
Trickett did very well in closing the chip gap and then managed to take the lead. This meant that the momentum was with the English poker player but this is where world class poker players come into contention. Dan Shak went all out and just as quickly as the lead had changed hands before, Shak grabbed a massive advantage and the drove it home on the next hand to win. The triumph saw Shak take home the trophy and $450,000 while Sam will have to contend himself with just $250,000 for coming in second place.
The snow and cold weather is still battering the UK and you would be forgiven for thinking that we were living January all over again as opposed to heading to the supposedly warmer embrace of April. It is enough to bring you down but then again, it could well be the inspiration for getting out of town and exploring what else the world has to offer.
