UK Poker Player Strikes It Big On Sunday

David VamplewThere are many different activities and entertainment available to choose from when it comes to a Sunday but there are a lot worse ways to spend it than playing poker. If you make the most of Friday and Saturday, it may be that Sunday is your day of rest before you have to think about getting back to work on the Monday. In this instance it makes perfect sense for someone to have a lazy day but you can take things easy while retaining a mental focus. This is where online poker can provide the perfect platform to sharpen your mind while giving your body a rest.

Of course, Sunday online poker is boosted by the fact that there are so many great online poker events and tournaments to choose from. There is a wide range of online poker sites providing a fantastic range of poker events for players and many with big money up for grabs. This is definitely a huge incentive to make no other plans for your Sunday because you could be in line to win a sum of money that could see you start Monday with a massive smile on your face.

Go for the big money and you may just get lucky

You may be thinking that this is a little far-fetched but it happened to one UK player at the weekend so the bar has been raised once again. You have to remember that someone has to win these events and you have to be in it to win it. The odds may be stacked against you but sometimes that is the majesty of poker. This is definitely what David Vamplew will be thinking after his big weekend success. There were a number of Irish and UK success stories to come from Sunday but picking up $61,457 deserves to be the main story and Vamplew, or “david1213” as he is known as online is clearly smiling now! The event was the PokerStars $225,000 Guaranteed Sunday Rebuy event.

One of the interesting things about the win was the fact that there was no agreement made at the final table to split the cash. There were some big step ups in money so the fact that no agreement could be reached meant that Vamplew was a huge winner. This could have worked against him but sometimes fortune favours the brave and this was definitely a daring and deserved success. Vamplew has had some notable success in his poker career, including a EPT London win and this was also his second biggest online cash success, meaning he has achieved even more than what he earned on Sunday.

If you think you have the poker skills to pay the bills, it is time to step up to the plate and show that you can mix it with the big boys. You just never know, you could earn a huge sum of money for doing so when it comes around to poker time on Sunday.

UK Player Cashes In Big With Berlin High Rollers

James MitchellSometimes making it to the final table is the main thing for players when playing in a big poker tournament. Getting past the bubble and into the money is always going to be an important thing and once players get beyond that stage, some will relax. There will be other poker players that can sense victory and will push on to win but there will be others who will be delighted with the fact that they can earn some cash. Getting to the final table can often take a lot of skill and effort and by the time a player arrives and the final table begins, some players may find that they have little left to give.

It is no doubt annoying to go out at this stage when the action is really starting to heat up but for UK poker player James Mitchell, there was a lot to be grateful for in his 9th placed finish at the EPT Berlin High Roller game. When you play in a high roller event, you know that there is big money on the table and for his ninth placed finish, James received €54,900. This is not a bad return for playing some poker hands and any disappointment felt by James for not pushing on further would have been tempered by the big cash amount he heads home with.

To the victor the spoils

Of course, the real financial prize goes to the winner and the EPT Berlin High Roller 2013 champion was Griffin Benger from Canada. Benger is a Team Ivey poker player and he received €429,000 for winning the event. This is definitely a prize that is well worth celebrating but there is no doubt that James Mitchell can take a lot of confidence and cash from his cracking Berlin performance.

This latest triumph continues the fine run of form that James has been in since 2012 where he has managed to clock up a great run of cash wins and high prizes. It is not always possible to win big poker events but finishing strongly and consistently is always going to be the mark of a good player. The first success James achieved in 2012 came at the EPT Deauville event in February.

EPT LogoIt was the €2,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em game and a 19th position saw a prize of over $8,000 making its way to the UK. This was followed by two money finishes at the 43rd World Series of Poker (WSOP) event in Las Vegas. A 283rd finish in a $1,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em game may only have brought about a prize of $1,942 but a lower finish garnered a much higher prize in the $10,000 World Championship No Limit event. James may have finished in 508th place but this saw him bag $24,808. The last big money win for 2012 for James came at the Fox Poker Club in their October Main Event where a 9th placed finish in the £400 No Limit Hold ‘Em game saw James pick up $1,052.

The first success in 2013 came once again at the EPT Deauville event where a 12th placed finish in the €5,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em game saw a prize of $53,193 picked up. On the 1st of April 2013, there was no fooling James as he finished 4th at the Genting Poker Big Game and this saw him bag $12,987. Earlier this month, the bwin WPT National event in Marbella saw James finish 21st in the € 1,500 No Limit Hold ‘Em game where grabbed $4,629 for his troubles.

With millions of poker players all over the world desperate to take part in an event like this one, let alone reach the final table, there is a lot for James Mitchell to be proud of. Hopefully the UK poker player can continue his fine run of form and his money winning abilities for the rest of the year.

UK Poker Player Comes Second In Berlin High Roller Cup

Najib KamandYou’ve got to be in it to win it is something that most people recognise in life. This is true for all events and activities that have a competitive element. While taking part in something to win it is great news, it often means that you have to deal with the heartache of losing out on something.

Then again, the heartache of losing is often lessened when you get a big pile of cash along with it. Money can certainly make a lot of things feel a lot better and for one UK poker player in Berlin recently, the pain of losing will not see quite so bad.

This is because Najib Kamand has picked up a great deal of money over this weekend in Berlin. Things got off to a reasonable start for Najib, based in Surrey when he took part in the €1,000 NLH Turbo game. He finished in 14th place, a reasonable spot and he picked up a decent amount of money for his efforts. A return of close to 3,000 euros is good enough for the weekend but it turns out that Kamand was just getting warmed up for the weekend.

Success follows on from success when you work at it

On Saturday the 20th of April, Najib entered the € 3,000 No Limit Hold’em – Berlin Cup High Roller and as the name suggests there was a lot of money at stake. There were close to 200 players involved in the event and with every player placing €3,200 into the event, there was a total of €564,540 up for grabs. The top 20 positions would receive cash but obviously anyone looking to make a big amount of cash would have had their heart set on the final table.

Micah RaskinThis is exactly what Najib was able to do, just coming up short at the end when he lost out to the winner Micah Raskin. However, there was a three-way tie agreed by the last three players so there was a big amount of money coming the way of Najib Kamand. €105,366 is the sort of prize that will greatly appeal to most players and it make the impressive return for the Turbo game on the day before look like loose change for the UK based poker player!

Kamand also received a huge poker win in 2012 when he bagged $153,578 thanks to finishing fifth in a 1,500 No Limit Hold’em at the 43rd World Series of Poker event which was held in Las Vegas. This means that the player has been able to bag some huge poker prizes in recent times and is definitely the envy of plenty of poker players in the UK and beyond.

Trickett Still Hanging On In There At WSOP-APAC Main Event

WSOP-APAC LogoOver the weekend there will inevitably be a lot of focus on the WSOP-APAC Main Event which is scheduled to finish on Monday the 15th of April. As the working population in the UK were getting set up for what would hopefully be a fun-filled Friday, Day 2 of the Main Event was already well underway down under. The number of players still left in the tournament, as you would expect, was huge, making it impossible to predict how it will pan out. However, any UK poker fan having a fly check of the updates before 9.30am would have seen a familiar poker name up to his usual antics.

Charles Chua was being bounced out of the event and Sam Trickett was the main who bounced him to the rail. This success moved Trickett on to a level of around 55,000 chips. This is way short of the top of the leader board but with plenty of poker left to play, this is not a state that should be causing any alarm or panic at this moment in time!

Trickett has a long way to go

Sam Trickett

While Trickett is playing around with about 50,000 chips the top players have got a lot more to shout about. At around 9.30am UK time, the chip leader was Rupert Elder who carried 204,000 chips. Behind him was Erik Seidel who had 175,000 chips and then Victor Teng who carried 161,000 chips. In fourth place was Feroz Khan who had 160,000 chips and in fifth place was Phil Ivey. Ivey held 155,000 chips and was looking strong to continue in the Main Event. It is fair to say that Ivey has been having a whale of a time in the past week or so and he must be brimming with confidence at the moment.

There are plenty of observers that will say that Ivey is the best poker player around at the moment but on Wednesday down under, he managed to win the WSOP-APAC $2,200 Mixed Event. The man wins poker tournaments, that is no real surprise or shock and some would say that it is hardly news but there was a bigger element to come out of this victory. This win earned Ivey his ninth WSOP bracelet, pushing him closer to the top. If Ivey can pick up another poker bracelet, and not many people would bet against this, he will move to ten WSOP bracelets, the same level as Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson. This would see Ivey sitting in joint second place in all-time career bracelet wins and he would move closer to the overall leader.

Could Ivey become the bracelet leader?

Phil Ivey WSOP-APAC

Phil Hellmuth may be sitting rather pretty on 13 bracelets but the way things are going for Ivey, he may well be in the running to bag some more bracelets in the near future. He has also had some success in his private life of late with the Supreme Court of Nevada stating that ruling of Ivey’s court case will stand. This has hung over Ivey for a year and a half and the positive resolution for the poker player may have helped to put him in a more positive frame of mind for the WSOP-APAC event. It is not as if Ivey needs any further assistance when it comes to poker tournaments but to use the old saying, he may have won a watch and in turn, this helped him to bag another bracelet!

It’s good news for Phil but with Sam Trickett hanging on in there, there is still good news for UK poker fans looking for an interest in the WSOP-APAC Main Event. There are a couple of high profile poker events taking place in Manchester and London this weekend so if you want to get out and about, you can. We’ve looked at them on site in the past few days, so all the information you need is here and of course, there will be plenty of online poker events to look forward to too. UK players did rather well on PokerStars last Sunday and you can bet there will be plenty of players keen to emulate that success this weekend.

UKIPT Series Is Ready To Roll

UKIPT Series Hippodrome Casino LondonAlthough the problems and differences between the United Kingdom and Ireland are still very much evident, there are ways that progress is being made. It is not as if a successful poker tournament is going to have any impact on the future of the 6 counties in the North of Ireland but it would be fair to say that the UK and Ireland Poker Tour, or UKIPT, has been a great success. The organisation has been operating since late 2009 and it has gone from strength to strength.

The new season does not properly get underway until the 12th of June, where there is a jolly outing to Marbella to commemorate the start of season 4. However, poker players keen to find some UKIPT action will be able to get involved this weekend with the launch of the UKIPT Series. This is not part of the official Season 4 but it will run alongside the main tour, providing additional poker opportunities.

The events, listed as £250+£25 events will follow the same structure as the Main Events from the UKIPT but there will be a tighter time scale. There will be a 30 minute clock in play and with a starting stack of 20,000, there is likely to be a lot of poker played. The layout of the event will see there being two separate day 1’s, which will take place on Friday and Saturday and then Sunday will see Day 2 taking place. Even though the average working week is changed beyond all recognition for many people across the UK, poker events that take place over the course of a weekend will be of benefit to many poker players.

You can rely on Liv Boeree to grab the headlines

Liv Boeree

The UKIPT Series event will take place in London with the new PokerStars LIVE at the Hippodrome Casino card room, which is sure to be one of the major poker venues in the capital. One player who is sure to be at the event this weekend is Liv Boeree who has taken to Twitter to drum up interest in the event. Given that she is a PokerStars player, it is perhaps not the biggest surprise that she will be at the event but any time Liv is at a poker event, she always manages to grab the attention.

There will be an added sense of value and merit to the UKIPT Series down to the fact that the winner will receive entry to the UKIPT Champion of Champions event. This will be a major highlight at the end of the Season 4 of the UKIPT. With a passport available for season 5 of the UKIPT season, this will be hotly contested. Poker players love value and being able to play for the chance to get a whole season of future benefits will definitely inspire players to get involved with the UKIPT Series in the months ahead. The more poker tournaments the better so this is a welcome addition to the UK and Irish poker community.

UK Players Have A Great PokerStars Weekend

PokerStars LogoIt is perfectly understandable that the weekend is the time when plenty of people take to online poker sites. Even though there are poker sites running games and tournaments at every hour of the day, there is not always the time or energy to take part in these games during the week after work. It is not just a case of turning up for these games and hoping that your skills will kick in.

Online poker can be a draining and taxing game which means that people need to feel at their best in order to succeed. This is not always possible after a long shift but at the weekend, people are more relaxed and they should have more free time. This is why online poker sites like PokerStars provide so many different tournaments and cash prizes at the weekend. Taking a look at the results and the winners from this weekend suggests that many UK players had a brilliant weekend!

Pride of place goes to a player called “holly17” who was taking part in the $1m guaranteed game on Sunday. This player managed to finish in third place, which saw them grab a total of $122,595 for their work. The top prize went to a “VanDobeln” from Finland, with a prize of $245,193.87. That may have been double the money that the UK entrant received for their third place finish but no one is going to be overly upset at claiming more than $100,000 for playing poker on a lazy Sunday! This win is undoubtedly the headline grabber when it comes to UK online poker players at the weekend but there were plenty of other successes at PokerStars to look back on too.

Lots of UK poker wins to celebrate

There was a UK triumph in the $109 Sunday Kickoff event although a two-way deal will have lessened the money that made its way back to the UK. “flukey111” was the successful player, holding off “HDH53” from Germany and this saw a prize of $24,862.86 going to the UK player. There was another two-way deal in the $11 Saturday Duel with “jamesg777” from the UK finishing in second place but receiving $3,352.31 for his efforts. This was only $500 less than what the winning player from Russia received so in that sense, it was a good deal for the UK player.

The $162 Sunday 6-Max event, which had a guaranteed $100,000 on offer, also brought notable UK success. “JIZOINT” finished in second place and they received $19,870.87 for their hard work and effort. Missing out on a top prize is always going to be disappointing but again, get close to 20 grand for a few hours’ work is something that most people are happy to accept now and again!

British Flag“TapeWormJim”, a poker player taking the name from a lovable computer character from the 1990s, took part in the $530 Sunday 500 where there was a guarantee of $300,000. Finishing in eight place, the UK player received $8,720.

With “Pyjama Dan” earning $1,500 for a second place finish in the $215 Weekly FL Hold ‘Em game, “TonyParkes” picking up over $4,000 in the $2.22+R Saturday Splash 3x-Turbo game and two UK players finishing in the top 6 of the $3.30 Saturday Micro, $25K Gtd game, there was a lot to celebrate. The last game saw “SplitSpadez” finish second but thanks to a three-way deal, they received $3,713.92 which was the same amount that first and third received.

Anyone looking for something to do next week should take encouragement from this spate of UK poker success. Stay tuned to MaxPokerBonus.co.uk or follow @maxpokerbonus on Twitter to remain up-to-date with the latest UK poker news.

An English Triumph On French Soil

France Poker Series LogoWhen it comes to getting one over people from foreign countries, the English have a lengthy list of opponents and rivals. We’ll leave aside the rest of the British and Irish contingent but even after doing that, there are plenty of battle scars for English people to remember. The history with Germany is obvious and shouldn’t be glorified with respect to a poker review and of course, there has been conflict with Argentina as well. The might of Maradona at the 1986 World Cup still rankles with many but not too many people will argue that he was a genius on the field of play.

It would be fair to say that the Americans can be a bit annoying to the English and it is good to get one over on them but aside from these, it is the French that seem to be the most annoying. The close proximity to France is definitely one reason for the strong rivalry but it would be correct to say that the attitude and opinions of the average man in the street in both countries couldn’t be more different. It is like chalk and a really bitter type of French cheese when you compare the English to the French, which is why there would have been a great deal of delight at the state of affairs at the start of Season 4 of the France Poker Series, the FPS.

A big prize pool on offer in France

280 players made their way to take part in the Main Event which carried a buy-in of €1,100. This buy-in managed to create a prize pool that was just under € 270,000, which would be shared out between 36 players. Going into the final table, the initial leader found himself evicted in fourth place and he was swiftly followed by Chris Brown. This ensured that the two final two players left in the Main Event was Michael Reubi and Englishman Neil Raine.

Neil RaineThere is no doubting Raine’s experience and skill at the poker table, he has the high-placed finishes and the cash to prove his skills. Raine came second in the UKIPT 3rd season but he grabbed his first win of the FPS at this event. As well as the kudos of being a series winner, Raine also managed to carry of €60,000. To make victory even sweeter, Raine gained entry to the event through an online satellite, which meant he battled all the way to get there.

The next stop off in the FPS takes place in Amneville and the event will run from the 28th of May until the 2nd of June.

Celebrations At London Poker Event

Barry GreensteinThe final few days of the EPT event in London had so much exciting poker action taking place it would have been easy to miss out on so many of the big moments and exciting finishes to some of the individual events. It was only right that Ruben Visser got his due for winning the EPT London event and taking home £595,500 but plenty of other poker players enjoyed success in London. The British weather may have felt more like the middle of January as opposed to the middle of March but with St Patricks Day celebrations gearing up across the capital of England, it was not just the Irish that were celebrating.

The Greeks have had their financial problems of late but there was good financial news for one Greek poker player during the big London event. The celebrating player was Miltiadis Kyriakides who overcame Barry Greenstein in the final of event J at the EPT9 London event. Considering that Greenstein was won 3 bracelets from the WSOP and has amassed over $7m in live tournament wins, this was a big achieve for the Greek. The Team PokerStars Pro was beaten out in the heads-up during the Pot Limit Omaha which carried a prize pool of £91,180.

Good to see a Greek poker success

Miltiadis Kyriakides was fortunate enough to take home £32,820 for coming first in the event while Greenstein took home just over £20,000. In addition to the kudos and congratulations, Kyriakides also got a signed copy of Greenstein’s book, ‘Ace On The River’. The final 7 at the table saw representatives from Finland, two from the UK, one from Belgium and in third place was Eoghan O’Dea from Ireland. Picking up over £12,000 is going to a little extra celebration to the St Patrick’s Day weekend for any Irishman so hopefully Eoghan made it home safely with some of his winnings left!

Matthias De MeulderAnother big winner during the event was the Team PokerStars Pro Matthias De Meulder from Belgium. He managed to triumph in the No Limits Texas Hold Em event that was event number 15 at EPT9. De Meulder just fell short of clinching a trophy at the EPT Deauville in February so the trophy in London represents good progress and of course, another fine payday! De Meulder earned £22,580 for his win while second placed Rameev Sergey from Russian earned £20,000. There was then a big drop off in money with third placed Eddie Tasbas picking up £9,710 while fourth placed finisher Georges Tohme from the UK received £7,100.

Who Else Triumphed At The London EPT Event?

EPT LondonNot only is London coming back down to Earth after an exciting St Patrick’s Day weekend, the climax of the EPT London event has left many people needing to take some time to calm down. Having so many poker events in a short space of time is a thrilling time for poker players but once the action has stopped and the adrenaline has left your body, it is only natural that you will feel a bit worn down. While the players take a much needed break and the EPT event starts to think about hitting Berlin next month, why not have a look at some of the other winners from some of the big tournaments during the EPT event.

There was a British winner in the High Roller event with Talal Shakerchi coming home in first place. He went into the final day as the chip leader but as we all know, that can count for very little. However, Shakerchi is on a great run of form at the moment. He had a final table finish in the Super High Roller event from Barcelona earlier in the campaign and he had a triumph in grand final of the previous EPT season. The £436,330 prize was gratefully accepted and Talal now has over $1.5m in overall earnings from tournaments which is not a bad return at all. The action from the High Roller table was being shared across the country thanks to the involvement of media star and professional poker player, Victoria Coren. In the end, Victoria finished in sixth place, earning more than £67,000 for her involvement in the High Roller event.

A good few UK players had great times in London

British Flag

Another UK success came with Gioi Train winning the No Limit Hold Em (NLHE) Spring Turbo Event and taking home £6,700 for his efforts. Of the final 9 players, 6 hailed from the UK so this was a poker event where home players had a lot to enjoy. There wasn’t a lot of money on offer but Philip Lee, Jean Issa, Andrew Richards, Hylton Goss and David Garvin got to make some money and take some adulation for some fine poker.

Bigger money was on offer at the NLHE Turbo event and this time, there was only one UK player in the top 8, with Adnan Charnaa coming home in third place, receiving £15,460. The top prize of £42,100 was clinched by Portuguese poker player Joao Viera while Sergio Aido from Spain came in second, clinching £26,460. It won’t be long until the next poker action and excitement starts to build but for now, a lot of players can look back on some time well spent in London.

EPT9 London: Day Six Wrap Up

EPT LogoDay Six of EPT9 London started with only a fraction of the original players left in the main event, but the excitement and nervousness could be felt in every corner of the place. Everyone wanted to know who would win; some were hanging out waiting to see results, and others had a lot to lose. In the end, Ruben Visser won the Race to London title, along with a sweet £595,000, but getting there was no simple task.

One superstar and rebound ready player, Mantas Visockis of Lithuania, dug his heels in and simply wouldn’t give up. Despite Visser’s lead 15.5 million to 3.7 million, Visockis brought his stack back up to 4 and then 8 million before all was said and done. Visser eliminated any question as to who would take this one; he turned over ace- queen.

Theo Jorgensen, back at EPT9 London after a very high profile robbery and shooting at his home in Denmark, sent Chris Moorman out with and ace and a king. At the same time, he gave his stack some fighting weight and brought it up.

Everyone was barely able to catch their breath before another flip came against Steve O’Dwyer, who was the chip leader. Olof Haglund was the threat, and his pocket queens are what beat the ace-king of O’Dwyer. His disappointment was even more intense, since he was within just an ace or a king of having a huge lead, but was left with only about a million.

The action continued for hours, with one big talent after another finding themselves being left out of the lead, but for Ruben Visser, it was one great hand after the next. For a little bit, it looked like Visockis might have the lead, but it didn’t last for too long.

Jorgensen found himself out after about two hours of a four handed game, but found himself out against Visser’s ace-8. The remaining three made a deal that left £140,000 on the table, as well as the title, Slyde watch and trophy.

Visser pounced on Haglund, the paperboy by day, and sent him out with an ace-8. The finish took two hours, and it was intense, but in the end, Visser overwhelmed Visockis with the last deal of the game and festival of EPT9 London: It was an ace of hearts that led Ruben Visser to victory.
