Brits Flying High In Venice

World Poker Tour LogoOne of the problems on looking back at poker events and tournaments that straddle the week into the weekend is that you often have to appraise performances before the final placings are announced. As we all know, a lot can happen before the final placings are announced and people who looked like sure-fire winners can often find themselves left with no money and a lot of disappointment. However, that is the nature of poker. The final table will always be the most important thing and the area that players should look to but if you can’t turn it on during the early days of an event, you’ll have no chance of making it through to the final places.

We are no nearer to finding out who the big winners at the WPT Venice event are but when the event made its way down to 36 players, a couple of British players were looking in a great position. This alone is something to be approved of, the more British players making the latter stages of poker tournaments the better but when you hear the names of the players who have battled through to the final 36, there shouldn’t be any surprise.

Cheering on the Scott!

Kara Scott

Kara Scott may not be strictly British but anyone that spent 10 years of her life here and did a lot to help females rise to prominence in the UK poker scene is always going to be one to keep an eye on. Of the two British interest players in the final 46, Scott was the better placed. This is down to the fact that she held 113,400 chips, which was not a bad level to be at. It has been a busy time for Kara because she has recently been serving as the hostess at the recent PartyPoker.com Premier League VI event. Perhaps keeping an eye on eventual winner Dan Shak gave her some pointers.

Not that Kara Scott needs too many tips or advice about how to deliver the best poker performances as she has provided so many major poker highlights in her illustrious career. Any player that has picked up more than $570,000 in live tournaments is definitely a player of calibre but as of yet, Scott is yet to be a winner at a WPT Main Event. Hopefully Venice is the venue where she rips up that statistic but there is an awful lot of poker to be played before a winner steps forward.

Liv keeps on popping up

Liv Boeree

Scott was joined in the final 36 by Liv Boeree, the Team PokerStars professional and all-round poker star. Boeree went into the final 36 with a stack of 93,600 chips which she will need to build on if she wants to land a major cash prize. Boeree has been able to make it to the money spots before in a WPT event. She managed to earn herself over $40,000 for a money finish at the 2009 Seventh Annual Five Star World Poker Classic event. Sadly this was not a poker event commemorating the briefly successful and then non-existent pop career of the band Five Star.

The top five ranked players going into the final 36 saw Giuseppe Pastura sit in 5th place and he had 254,000 chips. In fourth place was Steve Behm who had 263,800 chips while Erion Islamay was in third place with 281,200 chips. Sitting in second was Lauri Pesonen who had 287,300 and the chip leader of the final 36 was Ludovic Lacay who had a stack of 351,400 chips.

The glamour and beauty of Venice clearly never impacted on the determination or focus of any of these players and this will have to remain the case until the event is over.

An English Triumph On French Soil

France Poker Series LogoWhen it comes to getting one over people from foreign countries, the English have a lengthy list of opponents and rivals. We’ll leave aside the rest of the British and Irish contingent but even after doing that, there are plenty of battle scars for English people to remember. The history with Germany is obvious and shouldn’t be glorified with respect to a poker review and of course, there has been conflict with Argentina as well. The might of Maradona at the 1986 World Cup still rankles with many but not too many people will argue that he was a genius on the field of play.

It would be fair to say that the Americans can be a bit annoying to the English and it is good to get one over on them but aside from these, it is the French that seem to be the most annoying. The close proximity to France is definitely one reason for the strong rivalry but it would be correct to say that the attitude and opinions of the average man in the street in both countries couldn’t be more different. It is like chalk and a really bitter type of French cheese when you compare the English to the French, which is why there would have been a great deal of delight at the state of affairs at the start of Season 4 of the France Poker Series, the FPS.

A big prize pool on offer in France

280 players made their way to take part in the Main Event which carried a buy-in of €1,100. This buy-in managed to create a prize pool that was just under € 270,000, which would be shared out between 36 players. Going into the final table, the initial leader found himself evicted in fourth place and he was swiftly followed by Chris Brown. This ensured that the two final two players left in the Main Event was Michael Reubi and Englishman Neil Raine.

Neil RaineThere is no doubting Raine’s experience and skill at the poker table, he has the high-placed finishes and the cash to prove his skills. Raine came second in the UKIPT 3rd season but he grabbed his first win of the FPS at this event. As well as the kudos of being a series winner, Raine also managed to carry of €60,000. To make victory even sweeter, Raine gained entry to the event through an online satellite, which meant he battled all the way to get there.

The next stop off in the FPS takes place in Amneville and the event will run from the 28th of May until the 2nd of June.

East End Live Returns To Aspers Casino

Black Belt Poker LogoIt seems like almost every day or so that there is a new poker press release or story breaking that involves the Aspers Casino. This venue has been the host of some great poker events recently, notably the Sky Poker London leg and it seems as though there is plenty more poker action coming up. This is down to the fact that Black Belt Poker have announced that this is the venue for their East End Live II event. Given the popularity of the venue and its located in the East of London, this is hardly the biggest upset in the world of poker but having it confirmed allows players to take action and plan ahead.

The event, which starts on Friday the 10th of May, will have a prize pool which is guaranteed at $50,000. There will be two opening day flights for the event and the buy-in for the event has been cited as $200+$25. If this sounds a little bit too expensive for your tastes, the organisers have promised that there will be satellite opportunities from as little as $5, which will help to make the event a lot more accessible for many poker players.

A lot to live up to

Neil Channing

Last year’s event, which took place in April, attracted close to 400 poker players but it was a 20 year old who shocked the pack by coming home in first place. Sonny Pomroy overcame Elliot Aspden at the final table and he took home $13,300 and the kudos of beating a pack of big name poker players and a lot of poker players with much more experience.

Neil Channing, one of the co-founders of Black Belt Poker, said;

“We’re delighted to be returning to Aspers for East End Live. It’s quickly become one of the best places to play poker in the country, and if last time is anything to go by, players can look forward to another fun and exciting event.”

There is a genuine sense that Aspers in Stratford City is becoming one of the key poker venues in Britain and it is likely to keep on playing host to an increasing number of events in the months and years to come. The rise of the supercasinos that will come may have an impact but given its prime location in London, Aspers is likely to remain one of the venues that players want to play in and venues want to host their nights in.

Poker Player Jailed For Money Laundering

Ben CallinanPlaying poker tournaments around the world and mixing with the jet-set is a lifestyle that we can all dream about. While most of us are happy to play online poker and enjoy the occasional poker game with friends or in a casino, some people manage to take things a step further. Ben Callinan was one such player who seemed to be living the high life that we all dream of emulating and he had some success in his time.

An online database points out that between 2003 and 2009, Callinan won over $220,000 in poker tournaments in the USA and in Europe. He even took first place in a £500 No Limit Hold ‘Em tournament at the Blackpool leg of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour in November 2008. This triumph saw Callinan take home £12,000 and there were numerous second place and third place finishes around this time. Clearly it was a period of time when Callinan was at the top of his game and he seemed to have a lot of income from poker rolling on a regular basis.

The poker tables have turned now

However, if Callinan was on top of the world at this point, he will be feeling rather low now as he has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for money laundering. Ben’s father Walter was the head of a gang that brought cannabis into the United Kingdom and laundered a sum in millions of pounds in the country. Callinan Snr had a great lifestyle with over £5 million worth of assets in his name, including a Spanish mansion which was called Vale Park, named after the home stadium of his favourite football team Port Vale.

Walter CallinanWalter Callinan had been sentenced to 11 years in jail back in December 2011 but it is only now that the full story of what he and his gang were up to has been revealed. Callinan Snr admitted to passport offences, money laundering and all of the drugs charges that were put in front of him in court. This income also helped to fund the jet-set poker lifestyle that Ben Callinan enjoyed and no doubt the poker winnings helped to launder even more cash.

With playing poker games around the world being the dream for so many people, it seems strange that someone who had it all would throw it away in such a fashion. The glory nights at the poker table will seem a long way away for Ben Callinan now.

From Dusk Till Dawn Till Easter Monday

Dusk Till Dawn Poker ClubIf you are thinking about spending your Easter break playing poker but don’t want to be stuck inside for all of the weekend, perhaps it is time to venture out into the world of poker tournaments. You don’t have to aim for the WSOP or WPT just yet although these events may be in the back of your mind. There are plenty of places to play poker with real people in the United Kingdom and this Easter weekend, there is a poker treat being served up by one of the biggest and best poker venues in the United Kingdom.

If you have any interest in poker in the UK, you should have heard of the Dusk Till Dawn club in Nottingham. It may be removed from the glitz and glamour that London possesses but when it comes to great poker action and excitement, this is a venue that has seen it all and done it all. This Easter weekend, the club will play host to the APAT World Championship of Amateur Poker. It takes longer to say the title than it does for some players to remain involved in the tournament so you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that the event is commonly shortened to the WCOAP.

The poker action begins on Thursday the 28th of March and it carries all the way through until Monday the 1st of April. You will feel like an April fool if you are looking for some great poker action this weekend but miss out on what is on offer in Nottingham. There will be 10 separate events taking place over the weekend and the great thing is, there are a number of low buy-ins. The amateur nature of the event is at the heart of everything it does with respect to welcoming players and this can be seen in the affordable nature of the event.

It is an amateur poker event run professionally

Don’t mistake amateur for lack of professionalism though, this is the sort of event that players love to play and there will be a high quality of players and organisation on show. This event marks the opening of the sixth season of the WCOAP and one of the most awaited events will be the WCOAP World Amateur Team Championship which carries a £100+£10 buy-in. On the same day there will also be a £50+£5 buy-in for the WCOAP Stud Championship. The team championship event starts at 5pm while the stud championship begins an hour later at 6pm.

Amateur Poker Association & TourOther poker tournaments to look out for during the week include an Omaha tournament, a no limit Hold ‘Em Six Max tournament, a HORSE tournament and a championship based upon the heads-up. It is likely that there will be a big take-up for all of these events so if you are looking to get involved, sign up while there are still spaces available. You will also find that there will be a lot of interest in the World Amateur Poker Championship event and again, if you have a particular interest in this event, sign up early.

The Main Event in last season’s event saw 405 poker players get involved and there was a prize pool of over £40,000 on offer. Dave Garden, also known as “No Shoes” was the winner when he triumphed against Andrew Duffin. This saw Garden grab the trophy but he also walked away with more than £12,000!

The idea of spending your Easter weekend in Nottingham may not come across as the most glamorous way to spend your long weekend but this weekend is a little bit different. If you want a special poker time this Easter, Nottingham is a cracking destination.

A Female Poker Masterclass In Newcastle

Genting Poker Series 2013If there is one thing that many poker players have learned in recent times is that the top female poker players are just as capable as the top male players. There may be some arguments about the true world class nature of the best male and female players but there is no doubt that the vast majority of poker players in the UK would love to have the talent, staying power and of course, the lifetime career earnings that many of the top female players have shown in recent times.

A reminder of the talent that is included in the rank of female players was shown at the Newcastle leg of the 2013 Genting Poker Series or the GPS. This was the second GPS leg of the season and with 400 players buying into the event, there ended up being a prize pool that was worth £160,000. Considering the guarantee for the event was £100,000 it is fair to say that there was a good deal of interest in this event. There were plenty of famous UK poker names involved in this event but in the end, they all bowed down to Ellie Biessek.

Polish poker star takes home the spoils after ‘Toon trip

Yes, the Polish poker star has been a regular name on the UK poker scene since 2011 and she became the first ever female winner of a GPS event. Okay, the series has only been running since 2012, so it is not as if this triumph is breaking down years of male dominance but it is good to see that the girls continue to show that they can match it and mix it up with the boys.

Ellie BiessekTo be fair to Biessek, she has been showing for a considerable time that she is a match for the boys. In February 2012, Biessek picked up £4,000 at a side event at the GPS Birmingham event and then in March 2012, she reached the final table in London at another GPS event, where she picked up just less than £10,000. A third placed finish in the GUKPT leg in Belgium saw Biessek have career earned of over 13,000 euros but she can add another £38,000 to her earnings thanks to this triumph in Newcastle. It was certainly the best female performance in Newcastle since Cheryl Tweedy decided that she was going to try singing as a way to get out of the ‘Toon.

Of the final table, Dan Hemmingway was ninth and bagged £2,720 and Dom Mahoney came in eighth, taking home £4,320. In seventh place was Ashraf “Wadey” Waheed who earned £6,4000 and in sixth place was Jonathan Gill who picked up £8,960. In fifth was Jimmy Charlton who earned £11,840 and in fourth sport was Dan Woodford, who received £14,880. In third spot, George Clyde-Smith earned £19,104 and runner up Jamie Rutherford will have to contend himself with £25,600.

The next GPS event will take place in Sheffield in May.

Student Poker Players Sent To Coventry

UK Student Poker ChampionshipsThe Ricoh Arena has been in the news of late with the announcement that Coventry City have removed their staff from the premises. There is an air of uncertainty about the status of Coventry City at the moment with the owners placing one part of the business into voluntary administration while still claiming that the club is not affected. There is politic involved with penalty deductions from the football league and fans feel a sense of shame about their football team going into administration.

There is a lot of this behaviour going about at the moment. You only have to look up to Scotland and look at the new Rangers that are playing in the Scottish league. The old club went into administration and then was liquidated before a new club was hastily formed and pushed into the lower tier of Scottish football. Some of their fans cling to the notion that it is the same club this notion is so wrong it is not worth explaining. So, there has been a lot of drama and tension taking place at the Ricoh Arena of late and it will be good for attention to be placed on the site for other reasons.

Plenty of poker options on offer

This will be the case when the GUKPT sponsored Student Championship for 2013 takes place at the Ricoh Arena. There was some poker action on Monday with plenty of Sit N Go games, a free entry tournament and a £100+£10 student high roller game but the real action begins on Tuesday the 26th of March. This is because it is day 1A of the Student Main Event, which begins at 12.30pm. There is a £30+£5 buy-in and there will be a 15,000 stack and a 40 minute clock on proceedings. If that starts a little early for you or you get knocked out, there will be a £20 Deepstack event taking place at 8.30pm. There will be a 20 minute clock for this event.

GUKPT 2013On Wednesday, it is Main Event Day 1B and again, it is a £30+£5 buy-in for a 15,000 stack and the clock is set at 40 minutes. Again, for those players that will find this to be a little bit too early or get knocked out but want to have more poker action, there will be a £15 Deepstack event at 8.30pm. This games is billed as a guaranteed £500 game, so there is plenty to play for.

Thursday the 28th of March sees the Main Event final take place with the action starting at 1.30pm. There will be a 4pm game that provides free entry for every player that has taken part in the Student Championship and at 8.30pm there will be a £20 Triple Chance event.

The winner of the Main Event will receive a seat at the GUKPT Grand Final while High Roller winner will get a seat at the GUKPT Main Event. There are also team challenges and there will be Goliath Seats handed out to various players during the event, including one for the bubble boy! There is also an added bonus for the chip leaders at the end of the Main Event Day 1A and 1B because they will both receive a £100 bar tab.

There may not be too much fun to be had at the Ricoh Arena for Coventry City at the moment but for students that love poker, it is the perfect place to be this week.

Sky Poker Tour Excites In London

Sky Poker Tour LogoEven though there are plenty of great poker tours and events taking place in the UK and Ireland, it seems as though the Sky Poker Tour has managed to find some friends. There is a lot to be said for the way that Sky has managed to take over our lives and its live coverage of football and other sports is central to this. However, with their Sky Poker programmes and a genuine dedication to poker, it is easy to see why so many poker fans have fallen in love with what is on offer from Sky Poker.

The London stop-off of the 2013 Sky Poker Tour took place in the popular Aspers Casino in Stratford City and it seemed that plenty of people wanted to get a piece of the action. A £200 buy-in for the Main Event was an attractive price but there were 267 players seated and listed by the time that registrations were closed. This meant that the event is the biggest Sky Poker Tour event outside of any Grand Final event, so the organisers were extremely happy with what they had pulled together. With so many players you would expect there to be an interesting prize pool on offer and there was, with £53,400 up for grabs. However, players knew that they had to get into the top 36 places to take some of that money home with them!

Plenty of big name poker players were involved

Aaron Flamand

Julian Thew was on hand to represent Sky Poker but there were plenty of big poker names like James Dempsey and Dave Shallow involved too. None of these three players managed to make it to the final table where nine players contested. At the final table, the minimum amount of money that was being won was £1,180 but when there are bigger prizes to play for, you know there is going to be a bigger element of competition.

Sam Bayliss dropped out in 9th, taking the £1,180 prize with him while Silvano Leighio followed soon after with £1,575. The final two players battling for the big prize was Chris Love and Aaron Flamand. There was certainly no love lost between the two when Flamand managed to pull out a King-high flush which defeated the flush of Love and it was all over. Chris had to settle for £8,725 while Aaron received the trophy and £11,905.

There is some respite for the Sky Poker Tour for a little while but it returns in Dublin in May and that is bound to be a thrilling time for poker players.

Stratford City Aspers Casino To Host Another Massive Poker Event

Aspers Casino Westfield Stratford CityThere is no doubt that the Aspers Casino in Stratford City has captured the imagination and attention of plenty of big poker fans. London definitely has the capacity to host a great number of poker venues with a large capacity and of course, the Stratford area has a lot of goodwill about it. The spirit of the Olympics may be long gone but the triumphs felt in the local area may well inspire other people to achieve their best and this is something that poker players will look forward to.

There will be a big chance for poker success in the Aspers Casino in Stratford City with the upcoming Boylepoker International Poker Open Event. Boylepoker found some success with its first International Poker Open in Dublin, which was well received. The success of this event led the firm to decide to try their luck across the water in the United Kingdom and the Stratford City event will hopefully be the first of many great UK poker nights for Boylepoker.

Poker firm looking to make a bigger mark in the United Kingdom

The poker manager for the Boylepoker website was enthused about having the chance to come over to London and the company released a statement regarding the upcoming event. Ciaran Corbett said, “Our site is very popular with UK poker players. We like the idea of putting on a full scale professional poker tournament that the amateur poker player can afford to enter. It’s been a hugely successful formula for us in Ireland and now it’s time we brought it to the United Kingdom.”

Boylepoker LogoThe Boylepoker event at the Aspers Casino begins on the 17th of April, continuing all the way through until the 21st of April. The buy-in for the event is £250+£25 and the tournament will be a re-entry event. This means that any player that is knocked out of the event will have the chance to re-enter on any available starting day.

Even though Boylepoker is a known name in the online poker community, it obviously falls a long way short of the major players in the poker industry. While the IPO London event has the potential to be the first of many exciting poker events that the company brings to the UK, it will be interesting to see if there is the appetite for the event amongst UK poker players.

Brit Star Comes Second In partypoker Premier League VI

Premier League Poker VIIn the past year, there have been a number of great moments taking place in Stratford but if you are a big poker fan, the action this weekend will have taken some beating. The Aspers Casino in Stratford City was the venue for the PartyPoker.com Premier League VI event and there were plenty of players with an interest in the event. Whether you were there, watched it on a delayed internet stream or are just reading about it now, this was another massive poker win for a player that keeps on coming back for more success.

Dan Shak was the winner and he came out on top after a tremendous final table where the chip leader was being changed more regularly than a poker players undergarments! Yes, it was frantic at the final table and it took five levels for the first player to drop out of the running. The unfortunate player was Talal Shakerchi. To prove the point, Talal was at point the chip leader and looking good but as often happens in poker, things change and they changed very quickly. From sitting in first to being the worst, Talal Shakerchi was a loser in eighth place.

Dan Shak was the leader of the pack

As also so often happens, when the first big dam breaks, a flurry of players find their way making their way home from the event. In quick succession, Jennifer Tilly, Tobias Reinkermeir and then Daniel Cates exited the final table, leaving four players vying for the title.

At this stage of proceedings, Jonathan Duhamel was in the lead with respect to chops but he would be the next player to drop out. Antonio Esfandiari was next to go leaving Shak facing off against Sam Trickett. Trickett was doing well in front of a home UK crowd and there would have been a lot of people hoping for a local lad to success yet again in Stratford.

Dan ShakTrickett did very well in closing the chip gap and then managed to take the lead. This meant that the momentum was with the English poker player but this is where world class poker players come into contention. Dan Shak went all out and just as quickly as the lead had changed hands before, Shak grabbed a massive advantage and the drove it home on the next hand to win. The triumph saw Shak take home the trophy and $450,000 while Sam will have to contend himself with just $250,000 for coming in second place.

Shak has already been on Twitter after the event and he has been chatting to Shane Warne. One of the best things about Twitter is that it lets you eavesdrop on conversations that celebrities and star names will have with each other, which often brings a lot of gossip to the fore. Sadly, there was no battling between Shak and Warne, the two of them appear to be the best of buds. It looks as though Shak is on his way down under to the big upcoming WSOP event.

He claimed to have been on the fence about whether he was heading or not but after his partypoker triumph, he appears to be in the mood for more success in 2013. Then again, he also stated that he doesn’t want to see a poker hand until he gets over there. Shane Warned responded that he will do his best to get him to an AFL match when he is over there. This means there may be plenty of Twitter pictures and updates flying between the two next month so if this is the sort of Twitter activity you love, two big poker names will be keeping your entertained.
